first attempt at watercooling, please advise

this isnt going to happen for at least 2 weeks but i want to get a list of parts sorted now so i know what to do when i come to order the parts.
iv just put this list together on scan, any obvious mistakes?

Your Basket

LN18114
Alphacool NexXxoS Xtreme II Radiator - Rev. 2 (Requires x2 120mm fans) £25.49

LN17661
1L Feser One Fluid - UV Blue for water cooling systems (Non Conductive < 10 ìS) £6.70

LN20464
Alphacool NexXxos X2 Bold Highflow 775 (11714) £38.76

LN22661
EK Polished Nickel Plated Brass G1/4" (BSPP) Thread to 1/2" Hose Tail £11.91 (X6)

LN21073
1m Aqua Blue Neon Flow Springz 1/2" £3.50

LN8599
120mm Coolermaster Internal Case Fan with BLUE LED S12-EB £4.99

LN14376
Alphacool Laing DDC-Pump 12V Pro Electronically Commuted Ball-motor Pump £49.48

Total £150.68
but take off £8.38 for carriage

i have only included 1 fan as i am going to use the one that is on my heatsink at the moment for the other one.

i assume the 1/4" to 1/2" addaptor thingies are necessary as the pump, radiator and cpu block all have screw holes?

also is there a GPU block for a 9800GTX, preferably alphacool? i found loads for 8 series cards and 9800GX2 but none for 9800GTX

when i put all this in, will i need all the case fans i have at the moment? front intake for HDD, bottom intake towards GPU, back output behind CPU heatsink

and finally how do you attatch the CPU block to the motherboard?

Thanks alot

Re: first attempt at watercooling, please advise

U need 1/2" tubing & a Res.

The Swiftech micro Res is good or the XSPC bay Res.

9800 GTX Water Block

If you are planning to water cool your Q6600 and a 9800GTX in the same loop, then you may need a more powerful pump and a triple radiator.

I would keep the intake fan over the HD, and rear outtake fan. Personally I have all 3 in my water cooled PC.

The CPU block will come with the mounts and instructions to attached it to your mobo.

I've never water-cooled before but from the looks of it Scan doesn't offer a great range to choose from.

Go to www.aqua-pcs.co.uk or www.watercoolinguk.co.uk for a more complete range.

A Thermochill PA120.3 rad with DDC Ultra Pump and EK waterblocks should provide a very good setup.

A double will do - i've got an 8800GTX and Q6600 (OC'd) on the same loop and it's fine. That's with 10mm tubing btw.

You still need airflow - mosfets, ram etc etc all get hot and that heat needs to be removed. I have 2x80mm on the front (in take over hd's) and 2x120mm on the top/rear of the case.

isnt that 1/2" tubing?

forgot about the res, thanks.
was originally thinking about a triple rad but dont think there would be room for more than a double at the top of my CM-690, anyone tryed this? also which pump do you recommed then?

Two very good companies!

A second the DDC Ultra Pump, as I have one with a XSPC top (tops improve flow rate).

They are just to help stop kinking in your tubing, so you will need to buy tubing separately. I haven't got any Springs around my tubing and it is fine.

Re: first attempt at watercooling, please advise

Radiator - XSPC RS240 UV Blue - £26.99

Liquid - Feser One Cooling Fluid - UV BLUE - £7.99

CPU Block - EK Supreme CPU Block - Clear - £35.99

I would consier the XSPC Edge CPU Block as it is a good quad core block with very low restriction. I can't seem to find it in stock anywhere atm (shows how popular it is). It is slightly cheaper that the EK Supreme and performs up there with the EK Supreme and D-tek Fusion V2.

GPU Block - EK-FC9800 GTX SLI - £58.99

Pump - 12V Laing DDC-1T Ultra w/XSPC Acrylic Pump Top
- £59.99

Reservoir - Swiftech MCRES-Micro Reservoir - £13.99

Fan - Xilence Pro Fan 120L 1400RPM 120mm - LED Blue - £5.99

Barbs - 1/4" BSPP - 1/2" Hose Tail (EK) x 8
- £13.52

1/2" Clear High Flex Hose (XSPC) (2 metres) - £4.98

Total: £228.43 + p&p from both WCUK and Aqua PC's

This includes the 9800GTX block, Res and tubing. You can add in the Springs if you want to.

Thanks for that !TIMMY! thats realy usefull, although looking at the price i may have to wait until birthday and xmas...
by the way does the rad only glow if you have uv lights? i was just going to stick a blue LED fan on it to light up the inside of the case.
does the colour of the rad make a noticeable difference to its performance? i was just gonna get a black one as i have no uv in my case and just like the look of the black ones
also im not going to bother with the springs as they are just extra expence

I think the rad only glows if you have UV lights, and no the color does not make any difference to performance. I would have linked you to the black one as it is cheaper, but it was out of stock.

I have the older XSPC R240-D radiator and older XSPC Xtreme CPU block and they are keeping my q6600 and NB pretty cool with some low speed 120mm S-Flex fans.

I was looking around for a case to internally house a 240 radiator and I think you may have to slightly mod the CM690 to fit one in the roof.

Xtremesystems is a good place to look at other people's water cooling setups.

in that case ill just get a black one.

one fan is probably going to be a blue LED coolermaster and the other is a scythe one i already have.

yea, was just having a look around inside my case. i reckon it will fit, just depends on whether the screw holes line up or not... might just have to drill some if it doesnt... the pump and reservoir can go in the 5.25" bays as i am only using the top one and there is loads of space there. which holes in the reservoir can the hoses go in? just so i can plan out how it is all going to go

was thinking about cooling the NB in the loop aswell but on my motherboard the NB, SB and mosfets are all connected with copper heatpipes and heatsinks so would have to put everything onto the loop and that seemed like a bit too complicated, and anyway some fans came with the motherboard for the heatsinks so might just use them

ok will have a look at xtremesystems thanks

Re: first attempt at watercooling, please advise

U could get passive coolers for ur SB and mosfets, I have just ordered the Thermalright ones from Scan. Actually have them in my hand now There is no need to water cool the SB as it never gets that hot. The more components you have in a loop the hotter it will be, and the more powerful pump u will need, as the restriction also increases.

I water cooled the NB so I could overclock more, but I think my CPU isnt that great and I can only get it to 3.3ghz Prime stable. I am considering water cooling my ram because I have the Flex II's that can be water cooled lol.

Good luck with it all, make sure u post ur build!
