    Question/s...

    Hey all

Ok laptop coolers..they are essentially just fans powered via USB right.

Ive seen a crystal clear laptop cooler and its got me thinking.

How hard would it be for someone, like myself to covert 2 fans to use USB to provide power?

    What would I need?

The casing and such isn't a problem as my step dad works for a company where he could get them to make one.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Question/s...

    should be pretty easy.
a usb cable has 4 wires inside. a 5V wire (red), data - (white), data + (green) and earth (black). if you look at the end of the cable so that the pins are facing upwards then the wires match the pins in the order i just wrote.
so if you take a usb cable, cut through it and strip it, you will have the 4 wires exposed.
then take a fan and cut off the plug on the end of it and strip back the wires.
then attatch the + fan wire (red) to the + usb wire (red) and the fan's earth wire (black) to the usb's earth wire (black).
you should be able to ignore the fan's yellow wire and the usb's green and white wires.
then tape around each of the individual wires so they are insulated from eachother and then tape around the whole thing to tidy it up

    hope that helped

    Re: Question/s...

    That sounds quite simple.

Main thing i was concerned about was maybe a voltage difference or something along the way but if its that simple, am sure I can find a spare USB cable running around I have two spare fans so looks like it could be a go.

    Anyone else go any input?

    Re: Question/s...

Try it with a cheap fan/usb wire first?

That way if it don't work, it's not exactly a great loss

    Re: Question/s...

I wouldn't have said it, as it was common sense, but I've discovered that common sense isn't really all that common...

As for getting it cheap/free... make friends with all the local school tech departments. They never stop chucking out spare parts/wires/monitors/speakers/anything else they don't need any more.

i was thinking about doing that, for testing watercooling etc... as my school had all teh pcs replaced over the last year, only problem is that im not doing computing next year and i dont think that will go down too well with the teachers, especially if i turn up and try nick all the old stuff

    Re: Question/s...

    lol...

I just got to know the tech guy through "accidentally" deleted a few files that aren't supposed to be deleted one lunchtime. After he managed to retrieve them from the depths of the rubbish bin on the school servers (which were full, thanks to someone saying that the technies needed as much room as possible on the servers.. so maybe it would be a good idea to empty out folders...) he decided that I was worthy of getting some free computer parts.

He didn't ever manage to find anything bigger than a 15" monitor though, which is why my monitor is only 15" instead of the 22" I'm buying sometime this year.

And who cares about the teacher? They won't even know... when I say the tech guys, I mean the guys (or gals) that when the server crashes run around the school with screwdrivers trying to get it back online. Or when something needs doing to a computr, it gets done by them.
