VIA quits chipset business!!

No loss in terms of chipsets but a loss in market competition, not that they were ever really a strong contender. A competitive market is good for us all, keeps prices fair.

I would not really call them competition, I've not looked at a vai chipset since the KT400 series.

SIS seem to be nowhere and a I have a few worries about Nvidia

I hope some one get there act together or it just going to be Intel making Intel chipsets and AMD making AMD ones. (And via with there SFF ones) And thus in total control (including pricing) of there own platform

To be fair, barring the 686B Southbridge fiasco, I've always found that Via chipset-based boards from reputable manufacturers were perfectly acceptable. Part of the problem, I think, was that they had to compete on price grounds with Intel/nVidia/AMD, which was tough, considering that their costs usually included paying their competitor a license fee for the right to use the bus/socket. As a consequence they tended to find themselves heavily represented in fairly cheap boards - Jetway, PCChips etc., which were in themselves fairly unreliable. To that extent they copped a lot of flak which might more fairly have been directed at the board manufacturer, given that their boards based around the processor manufacturers' own chipsets were usually fairly wonky too.

I did too. OK not lightning fast, but good reliablility. Put it this way...I never nuked a VIA bios! and thats a miracle!
