Silent 700watt PSu needed?

Can any one recommend a very quiet power supply that is around 700watt with a modular design?

Are you sure you need 700W?

A corsair 620W HX or enermax modu82+ 625W will cover almost any system these days and are both as silent as they come.

Probably not. I currently have the Hyper T 580, which is great but now I can hear the fan above everything else.

My system is water cooled and silent, so silence is important.

The above PSU's will be best for you then. They will be far more efficent than the Hiper and essentially inaudiable.

I have the same issue lol, my 700W Xclio is louder than everything else now but im not sure if its a fault or was like it before. Corsair is always rated high, go for it lol.

Corsair no doubts, as it has very efficient cooling the fan wont kick in to its higher rated speed as quick.
The fan is very very quiet t begin with.

Define very quiet? I call very quiet, as in putting my ear against it and hardly hearing anything. As in with the computer together and side panels on I can't hear a thing.

Well I cant hear anything, just put one into a watercooled system and I cant hear it above the rad fans.

It's can't be heard really even with your ear next to it. If there is any other fan in your system chances are it will be louder (even if near silent) than the corsair. The enermax has been proven even quieter still but to the naked ear I doubt you would tell the difference.

Personally I think Corsair are the way to go, if just for their 5 year warranty which I think I'm right in saying is 2 years better than the other well known power supply manufacturers. They also have a very good reputation from reviews and users, not to mention most of the range is made by Seasonic (except the TX750 and VX550 which are made by Channelwell, which isn't a bad make by any means and are not modular anyways).

I'm on quite a tight budget so I'm not certain what I'll go for, it would also be good if it would take 2 x 4870's in crossfire for a future upgrade. I may go for a non-modular supply to save some cash at this rate!

EDIT: The other thing is, even if the fan does ramp up when the PSU is really loaded up this is only likely to happen in games which is the sort of time when PC noise starts to become of little issue to me.

The level of noise is going to be also dependent on your case, its position distance etc. I do understand your caution though. Nothing worse than getting a product on reccomendation then finding it isnt exactly what you were looking for.
Found a review of the Zalman 750, apart from some slightly shaky 12v1 ripple it dosent look half bad.

It still uses a fan, and it uses the same fan as found in the Corsair 620 HX.

The Zalman is made by Seasonic btw

400W load is quite unusual; your PC won't be drawing that sort of wattage on a regular basis, maybe in gaming but that’s about it. During gaming you are most likely to have speakers or headphones on so I can't see that being a problem. During surfing and normal tasks the PSU will be very quiet as they only draw what they need, less wattage, less heat so lower fan speeds.

SPCR does some of the most accurate and well thought out tests with regards to noise output that I've come across. You could pick the one they rate the best for sound output! Top of the list is the Enermax Modu82+ 625W, but it's not cheap at £99 and there is a very minimal difference between that and the Corsair series.

Here is a quote from the Emermax review that puts it very nicely:

Having crowned a new silent PSU king, it's prudent to point out that in a competition among the best in any category, whether Olympic athletes or high performance computer power supplies, the differences between first, second and third place (and even lower ranks) are often marginal. With swimmers, runners, and skiers, it's sometimes measured in hundredths of a second. Similarly with quiet, high performance PSUs, a number of Seasonic and Corsair models come within 1~2 dBA@1m of the Modu82+ 625's default acoustics, and their electrical performance is close enough to be considered identical. In practical usage, the noise advantage between this PSU and some of the other top ranked quiet models may not even be audible because of the masking effects of other louder noise sources, either in the computer or in the environment.
