Question Can anyone recommend a fast, quiet ~200Gb drive?

    Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good, fast and quiet 300Gb drive. I'd considered the 150Gb velociraptor that's coming out but they're just so damned expensive compared to everything else.

Are there any other fast drives around. It's purely to use for the OS

    Cheers!

    Paul.

If you want something around 200GB then the Samsung Spinpoint 160Gb is very quiet:

However, for an extra £6-12 you can get double the storage and you can never have enough storage These are both good, quiet 320Gb drives:

EDIT: Just noticed the title says 200Gb, but thread says 300Gb...

    Excellent, cheers very much

Currently wanting to replace my Raptor 150....it's just so damned noisy plus it seems to not be as quick as I'd thought. Maybe it's just the noise making it sound like it's being slow or something.

OcUK are currently selling the Samsung 320GB single platters. Very fast and quiet drives

I would prefer western digital but no one seems to have their single platters, or arent able to confirm it anyway.

Thanks again. I'll have a think tonight and get one of them. It's only OS so I reckon split in half with the other half for Acronis should I trash the OS and need to restore Even with lots of games on I have trouble using up 100GB let alone 300!

The single platter 320GB drives are a lot faster than lower capacity drives so you may not use the space but for a little more money you get more speed and the option to store more.

Re: Can anyone recommend a fast, quiet ~200Gb drive?

Might be worth looking through some of the Tivo UK Community threads as noise level is normally the deciding factor for TiVo drive buyers and drives get discussed fairly regularly. I normally use Samsung Spinpoints where noise needs to be minimalised.
