    Sound Card Installing

Just ordered my Asus Xonar XD of Scan and want to make sure that when i get it i install it right. My plan is for the steps outlined below...

    1) Disable on board sound in bios

    2) Open PC case and install card

    3) Turn on PC and install drivers

    4) Enjoy

Just wondering if there's anything i've missed out or should be aware off and do i need to uninstall any drivers for the onboard sound or not?

Uninstall the old drivers, nothing else that you have not written above.

I normally don't bother uninstalling old drivers... I don't see why it would matter really?

AHHHH. two different answers. Surly though if i don't disable to sound card in the bios and i just uninstall the drivers next time i turn my pc on it will just reinstall some crappy driver.

i think i'll do both. Uninstall the driver (anyone know any good driver cleaners) and disable it in the bios

Drivers, the bane of all that is effectient.

Drivers are such a common cause of conficts and on top of that, if your overloaded with loads of drivers, windows takes longer to load.

I cba to go into the details, but I'm sure someone will advise why

(I remember this from Uni last yeah, tried it out on my missus pc *my old one* and it did speed up a bit. About 10 seconds or so and there wasn't alot of old stuff taken off.)

    Anyway, thast off the point...

I have a question, would you be able to let me know it this works on Vista and if it helps latency issues when putting a Midi/USB device through for a prog like Cubase if possible?

    Regards

    Re: Sound Card Installing

You'll need to plug a 4-pin floppy drive power cable as well as the front panel headers. (Just stating the obvious there. )

    Re: Sound Card Installing

I would uninstall hem too just in case. I updated my media pc that connects to main tv and used the onboard sound but I need optical soundcard card. I bought a new card, uninstalled, disabled onboard sound, installed new drivers restarted and worked fine

    Re: Sound Card Installing

Hi,think if you want, you don't even have to disable onboard sound(can do it any time, anyway). At least with XP,in settings you can choose which sound card you want to use.
Then you can play around & see which, works best with what.

    Re: Sound Card Installing

I would uninstall the old drivers and then reboot and disable onboard in the bios. Before installing the new card I would run drivercleaner pro as shaithis mentioned.

My view on these things is just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Thats basicly what i'm going to do although one problem i've found is with the driver cleaner. My onboard sound is a SigmaTel but Drivercleaner Pro doesn't seem to have them. Its got realtek and creative though. what should i do about that

    Re: Sound Card Installing

Hi,not paranoid about sound, but like quality sound,so looking at most alernatives, bought a squeezebox 3(for HiFi).Feeding a decent DAC.One thing you can't hurt anything, trying anything might learn you something.
