Hi there,
Yesterday I recieved from Dabs my shiny new Volcano 12 HSF. Fitted it within 15 mins and fired her up. through the night I tested it steadily and eventually ran 10 loops of 3dmark. My temps under load were 45 degrees with the fan on 2800 rpm which I thought was pretty good! compared to my coolermaster DCHP1 (or whatever it is) which under load were giving me temps of 55 degrees at 3500 rpm.
Oh, I should just mention that I put the thermal sensor on underneath the CPU so I could easily set it to auto-mode later on if i desire, but I wanted to primarily set it up on Manual control so I installed the 3.5" drive bay controller.
Anyway, seeing as I leave my computer on all night, I left it on last night and at 1:30am as I went to bed - all was ok after a great session playing Deus-Ex.....
Our lass woke us up this morning saying that my computer was making a lot of noise..... I was half-asleep so didn;t give two-****s. When I was awake I went into the room and yeah - it sounded like my fan was on 5500 rpm. So I switched the monitor on and checked my Soltek Hardware Monitor - it showed the CPU on a nice 37 degrees but yes, my fan WAS on its max of 5500 Rpm even though my manual 'knob' was turned down to 2000 rpm.....
Hmmmmm.
So, I swivelled the knob forward and backward to no avail - the fan was stuck on 5500 rpm! (and very loud!!!).
I shut comp down, undid the case and had a butchers. Yep, the connector was still on for the manual cntrol. I undid it, reseated it and connected it etc. booted her up - no difference, it was still stuck on!
So I tried again, and still no difference... BALLS!
So I set it up on Automatic and it was fine. it defaults to 4000 rpm though and adjusts accordingly uwards (not downwards) so its always loud-ish on auto....
ANY IDEAS WHY THIS HAS HAPPENED?
Suggestions welcome because I'd hate to return it after it was performing so well!
