Heatsink for e8400?

Looking for the best heatsink at around £15-£25 for my cpu on an asus p5n-d, dont need the best like thermalright ones but id like something quieter than my current arctic cooler 7. All suggestions are appreciated .

are you after a good overclock whilst quiet or will just quiet be ok?
As my akasa evo 120 is near enough silent but don't think it's an amazing overclocker. (I do get 3.1ghz stable on my e2160 at near silent)
£23 from pixmania but postage is steep.
A trawl through the various hsf threads may be in order.

just quiet, i plan on keeping this cpu at stock till the warranty is gone as by then ill need it faster. I even have speedstep etc on just because its idle most of the time and id rather use less power , anything that uses a 120mm fan should be good but ill try to mount a 120 on the arctic tomorrow just to make sure.

all i know is overclocking voids it, if you try and say the temps are to high they will only regard results coming from their stock cooler. Is this one good enough, http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=383006 ? will make sure i can/cant mount a 120mm on my current heatsink because my PSU is the loudest id just like something that can run on medium and not be to loud(have to have the 92mm fan on low ).

Yeah the mine is ok. I just don't like the odd sized fan. Its very quiet though and gives decent temps.

I know your saying you have the artic cooler but ive never heard anyone say the are noisey ive had loads and the kids are still using them if you are using a P5N go into the bios and turn the speed down or use the asus windows tool id say if yours is making noise theres somthing wrong with it there maximum rpm is 2500rpm i was playing with the daugters last nighr and turned it to max and could barely hear it.
Best chose for all round use a bit of overclocking quietness and price has to be the Artic freezer pro they are under £15 and can cool even overclocked quads and the other bonus is it doesnt have to have the board removed to fit a back plate as it uses the same fittings as the intel HSF.

The others mentioned are great coolers but are more expensive and require removing the motherboard most people started of with the freezer and alot still use it as its great at what it does.

well on max the fan spins at 2900rpm, and it sounds like a jet engine lol. Will try a 120mm fan on it tomorrow though.

Yeah I agree my freezer is a blooming noisey thing. You can sort it by putting the fan to 60 - 65% but then it barely cools.

Great cooler if you can stand the noise but in an otherwise quiet/silent PC it's awful.

i could live with it but i would probably mod it for a 120mm fan if possible because id rather make the most effort for everything to be silent, everything in my case is except for this damn psu and thats the only reason i can fault the Xclio psu because they are designed flawed, half of it has a plastic layer over it for it to try and force the air down and then around instead of just all over, this fails because it means the half the air just bounces back at it and so makes louder noise and forces fan to spin faster >.<. But as long as i got music on its fine .

You may be right about proving it (though you may not), but I think you'll find that they're covered on the point of the heatsink. Certainly on the retail product, the warranty requires that the "product" is "properly used and installed", and that damage caused by a variety of things, including "usage not in accordance with product instructions" and "improper installation" is specifically excluded. Could using a different heatsink, or fan, or thermal grease be "improper installation"? I'd have thought it likely.

That's not unreasonable, either, as they can hardly be expected to cover damage caused by third-party products which may or may not be up to the job.

As for providing it, the removal of their insulating pad/paste may be enough.

Whether they actually would invalidate a warranty like that, I don't know, but their warranty certainly seems loose enough to give them plenty of scope to do so.

Well, this chip is plenty for me at this time and its just sitting idle wasting power so i use speedstep etc now. I doubt they would invalidate it but i doubt a chip would die to quick providing it doesnt die in the first 6months(which it hasnt), got old socket 1 cpus still working lol.
