I'm getting a WD6400AAKS, but whats the benefits over say one of these:

put simply, the 500 GB drive has two 250GB platters inside.
the 640GB drive has 2 320GB platters inside.
so... what does that mean?
that means that on the wd6400aaks the platters are denser,
what difference does that make? i hear you say.
it basically means the information on the drive is closer together (ignoring fragmentation) meaning that the drive read head doesn't need to travel as far to find the information.
aaaandd that means?...
that means that things load faster

You also get 140GB more (obviously i guess ) for only a small amount more cash. Most people say the WD AAKS drives are quieter than most as well, though I can't say I own one myself so I can't back this up.

i own a 500GB AAKs and a 640GB AAKs, and they are both quieter than my corsair HX620w...

yup excellent description, only thing to mention is price. In Feb I got a WD 500gb hard drive for £60, now for the same money I can get 750gb! incredible. I think the difference between 640 and 750gb is just a few pounds (7-9 i think). 750 would use 3 250gb platters though....
And the other question is "Will it make any difference in the real world?"
The drives have internal caching so many of the read/write operations are to cache, rather than to the drive platters directly, and operating systems themselves cache data (delayed write) until the processor is less busy and has time to do a bit of disk writing, sowhile the disk performance is theoretically better, you might not notice much difference in the real world. If the priced difference is minimal, then you have nothing to lose for going for the drive that has the better theoretical speed, but IMHO, paying a large premium isn't worth it in a home set up.
