    PSU advice needed

k guys this will be the 2nd system i will have EVER built - my exisiting system is being relagated to a media centre (over kill i know) but will also be used for lan parties - my new build will be similar to my existing rig with a few added components - a 30" Dell monitor 1 x 4870x2 with the option to add a 2nd in the future and 4 500gb Hd or 1 raptor and 3 x 500gb HD obviously i will need some power for all this stuff and was wondering what psu would be good motherboard - rampage extreme CPU not sure as the 9450/9650 run warm (possibly have to add liquid cooling to the line up also)

so any recommendations on PSU and has anyone got or had experience with the ultra x3 (those ribbon cables make for an attractive option for hiding cables)

I apologise if there is a thread already for this

    cheers - sh4rk

Yeah the 750W is almost certainly enough for that.

    Re: PSU advice needed

sorry i did forget to mention that the psu has to be modular sick of cables lol as for budget i don't really have one - the 1000w ultra x3 is what i was looking at but obviously corsair enermax and thermaltake toughpower series are all on the shortlist

    Re: PSU advice needed

These guys get good write ups (not used them myself, a friend has one and it is very quiet), there's a 750 and a 850to choose from (though I think you'll be fine with 750w) and are both modular http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-38-117-0.

    Re: PSU advice needed

    620w ? surely that won't be enough power to eventually run 2 x 4870x2, watercooling,rampage extreme, 4 x HD 2x DVD + 7 fans + 4gb RAM and a CPU ?

    Re: PSU advice needed

No probably not.. but why would you need two HD4870 X2's? Even on your 30" monitor it's going to do a good job for a long time. By the time it is not doing so well you might as well sell it and get the new latest and greatest.

    Re: PSU advice needed

With one 4870x2 the 650w Corsair is plenty, but with two you'd be wanting a 850w PSU really.

    Re: PSU advice needed

the 2 x 4870 x2 is not a definate but a good PSU is not cheap and if i did decide to upgrade to 2 GPU i don't want to be swapping out a psu because i didn't have the foresight to do it properley in the first place - as for plenty of gaming power yes 1 4870 x2 is supposedly awesome but games come - ones that use more rescources than all the others - ones that are amazing - and in 12-18months time adding a 2nd GPU for a couple o hundred quid is better than paying £2000 for a new comp to run it (i hope)

and yeah the be quiet dark power look cool if only they had the ribbon cables of the ultra x3 but i guess i could work around that

    Re: PSU advice needed

but in 18 months there will be cheaper better cards to choose from The corsair 1000W will run any system you care to throw at it but it's a lot of money if you don't end up needing that sort of power.
