Buy a Q6600 now and overclock?

    Hi All

Am looking to make the switch from AMD AM2 3800X2 to an Intel based system.

With the 45nm C2D's around, I was looking at getting one of these (E8400 with E0 stepping maybe?). But having read around, the Q6600 seems to be more future-proof (it's done well to date, but getting on a bit!).

What overclocks are people getting with recent batches of the Q6600 (heard they're not as good)?

    Thanks
    SK

If you don't !need! to upgrade right now, it maybe better to wait for intels next chip, Nehalem, expected in the 4 qurter of this year. But if you really want to upgrade now, then the q6600 is a great chip (I just upgraded to it) and is at a great price, too.

I've had mine upto 3.6 on air (as proof that it could), but have it on 3.0ghz for everyday use.

Seconded. A Q6600 o/c'd at 3.0GHz is an an absolute steal at the moment and has plenty of horsepower for most people.

I just got a Q6600 and the VID is 1.35V. Most of the recent chips seem to have a relatively high VID but 2.8Ghz on 1.32V is going strong and it's more than enough power for me.
