how can I tell what stepping number my E8500 has?
I'm fairly sure it's going to be the C0 stepping but as I bought it last week, just after the E0 stepping was announced, I wondered if I might have the new one.
Can anyone tell me how I can find out? Preferably without having to remove the CPU and clean off the AS5.

I think you are after core stepping value rather than CPU stepping. AFAIK CPU-Z reports CPU stepping value as core stepping value. CPU stepping is a single digit number rather than a hex pair for example A0,B0,C0..etc used for core stepping. I am not sure if there's a relationship between the two steppings but they are certainly different. The only way I know how to find out the core stepping on your Intel CPU without dismantling your machine is by looking at the 5 digit number at the end of the PRODuct CODE in the retail box it came in. It should look like "SL87R" string. Note the string and search for it on URL: processorfinder.intel.com.(please copy and paste the URL, can't post http links on my first post on hexus, it seems) You should be able to find the core stepping for your CPU. If you click on the sSpec# for your CPU, it should give you more info about your proc and any feature changes for that particular CPU.
I would be very interested to know if there is any other way to do this.

In Linux if you want to find out CPU stepping(not core stepping).
run
#grep stepping /proc/cpuinfo

If you are talking about livecds forked off of standard linux packages such as knoppix, dsl etc which are based on debian distribution, then it will work. proc filesystem which contains all of the system information is standard in any linux kernel.
I agree they are very very handy especially when windows fails and you have to recover your data.:) Have fun!
Cheers.

Look on the box (assuming you still have it) the should be the sSpec# if it is SLAPK then its C0, the Intel Spec Finder does not currently have the E0 stepping E8500 so I can't give you the code for that.
For more see here

Edit:
Oh and for Intel CPUs CPUz will tell you the stepping revision see image below

Where it says revision will be what you want to know!

Yes, as I expected mine turned out to be C0.
