    Re: want a cheap 500watt PSU

    k thnx to everyone who replied i think i'll go for the corsair one since it seems to be the safest bet. I hope it will be good enough.......though i have one final doubt cause the palit one i am plannin to buy requires 8 pin and 500watt cause it is an oc'ed one so again is the corsair 450vx sufficient

    Re: want a cheap 500watt PSU

    I'm pretty sure if you're getting the 450W PSU from Corsair it will be enough.
    The Watts don't always mean everything, it's about the quality of the PSU itself, about the 12V rails etc... Corsair is known for great PSU's, their series are the best imo... Most of Corsair's PSU's are able to supply more Watts than it's given amount. Best example of this is the TX650W PSU from Corsair, which is able to power to 780W on full load... (wouldn't recommend doing that to much though, but many non-branded either blow up or never make it that far)

    Anyhow, from ATI's site (can usually get away with less);
    450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
    From Hexus reviews, full system power draw during 3DMark06 runing at 1,920x1,200 with 4xAA and 16xAF;

    System the test is run on:
    Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850
    MSI X48 Platinum (X48+ICH9R)
    4GiB (4x 1GiB) DDR3-1066 - 7-7-7-20 2T @ 1066MHz

    If you look at the power draw, it's far below 450W, this is also because the test setup doesn't have a lot of HDD's, many fans or what so ever, it's bare minimum... Though these parts don't draw that much power, HDD's use like 9W when in use, cooling fans use like 3W, so all that together won't add that much.

    thanks a lot dude for warning me about cheap PSU's i did a little research of my own..even met a friend of mine who suffered a blown video card because of a cheap PSU...so keeping in mind also the fact that sometime in future i might go for another card in cross-fire(maybe) i am going for a little more and have zeroed in on the 'Corsair 520watt HX'
    i hope its the right choice, but i think it is

    Delete the drivers with the nvidia card still in. You're in for a headache the other way lol

    Re: want a cheap 500watt PSU

    Uninstall the nvidia drivers if you can be bothered. The chances of the nvidia and ATI drivers clashing are pretty slim.

    Most around here will do the uninstall plus run drivercleanerpro afterwards, although I've never experienced the need personally.........and I change hardware quite frequently.

    is this enough then just plug in the new card and install drivers without re-installation of windows?

    Yeah, no need to re-install windows at all.

    The most extreme thing to do is as Shaithis said above but it isn't really necessary most of the time.

    Re: want a cheap 500watt PSU

    sorry guys for the late reply was too excited and busy playing with my new hd4850...its awesome(considering i jumped from geforce 6600)

    i had said i wud tell about the installation of my card.......it was flawless did exactly what guys(above) had advised me to do.

    another recommendation which worked mind blowingly was the SMPS recommendation ....I got a Corsair one, and i swear i've never been more happy spending money on this its completely worth it.
    In fact i used to have problems with random shut downs, which did not happen since.

    So my final words dont be cheap for a SMPS the money u save on it will be spent fixing or replacing stuff which it would take with it.
    thanking everyone who replied.
