    BluRay Drive Advice

    Hi All,

Apoligies if this is posted in the wrong place, its my first post so bit unsure of where to post this!

I am looking to upgrade my DVD Burner to a combine BluRay device that can do all a "normal" burner can do and also burn BluRAy data disks and also if possible play back Movies?

Can anyone advise the best drives for this at a resonable cost?

    Thanks

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Just a blu ray player isn't too bad anymore, about £65 for an LG that does blu ray and HD DVD if you joined that camp before it failed.

This will still burn everying apart from Blu Ray though

But actual Blu Ray (and everything else again) Writers are still expensive

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Ah, thanks for that, was thinking the LGwoud write BluRay, the real writers are as you siad much more expensive.

May go for the read version only, does anyone know if the LG GGC-H20L will come with software that will let me watch a BluRay movie?

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Well the save Drive but OEM says it includes software so I'd assume the Retail kit would have the same if not more.

I believe they come with power DVD which is what you need for the job

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Blank Blu ray media costs more per gigabyte than a 750 GB HDD
Are you sure its worth it?

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Thanks for the advice guys, Think I might wait for BluRay recorders to drop a bit and then look again. Looks like a cheapo dvd-rw drive is the best choice right now.

Is lightscribe worth it? Do I need special CD's?

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

If you're going to use it I suppose it would be useful. Personally I don't have a problem with a pen lol

I imagine it works better on some discs than others, not sure if there are particular one's you need.

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

    Yes you need special disks.

There are also two different versions of this technology, and i think there are different disks for both. Lightscribe is the main one, but you also have LabelFlash. I believe it was NEC that didn't want to pay the license fees for Lightscribe, so came up with their own. A quick look on Scan shows that they only have Lightscribe drives now and only one labelflash disk.

Disks are more expensive than regular blanks, but not by nearly as much as they used to be.

    Re: BluRay Drive Advice

Not sure if the drives have gotten better.....but when I used LightScribe a while ago, it took an absolute age to "etch" the disk.

After my third disk, I never bothered to use LightScribe again.
