    Recommend me a NAS box

    Lo,

I've re thought my home network strategey and now I need a NAS (ethernet) box with room for 1x TeraByte HDD.

All the ones I've seen seem to be really expensive for what they are, can anyone recommend me a good value one?

Also, will the connection via ethernet be fast enough for HD Video streaming?

    Cheers,
    Fifthfreedom

EDIT: Just found this one: http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=756759
    Anyone have one?

EDIT #2: Just thought, I already have a home server in the area where I'm looking to put the NAS would a USB enclosure shared over ethernet be just as fast?

I've got a Synology Diskstation. And it's one of the best bits of kit I've ever bought. Prices are for the unit, you supply your own disk.

It does SO much more than just being a storage box on the network. It does all my P2P downloading and seeding, hosts websites, ftp services, itunes and media sharing to all sorts of devices (eg my Roku soundbridge, my modded Xbox and my 360)

The list of stuff it does is amazing (go see the website synology dot com) Plus its the size of a hardback book and totally silent. It's on 24/7 and uses very little juice too.

    HTH

Oh, and 100Mbit is easily fast enough for HD video streaming.

Wink Re: Recommend me a NAS box

    Hi
I too am looking at a NAS drive to provide backup and store my video/ pic collection.
I currently use a 1TB drive formated NTFS in my PC for this purpose but I would prefer it located in another room in case of PC theft etc. 1 or 2 drives not too bothered about raid would be OK.

Would the Synology allow me to simply fit my existing 1TB drive which is fomated NTFS. Does it support FTP for external access of my family pics

Taking of file formats is it true that some formats like FAT (I dont know what NAS drives use) have a file size limit which is less than a large or HD video hence my leaning to NTFS.
    Thanks in advance

    Kev

    Indeed.

HD steaming over wired ethernet should be fine. I don't think wireless is reliable enough, although I haven't tried it, so I may be wrong.
