ERUs AMD ATHLON XP-M 2500+ SKT-A OEM BARTON (Mobile)Unlocked

We all seem to be talking about the 2500+XP-M CPUs, so i though i tell you all about my success with one. If someone doesnt already know about them they are just laptop CPUs that have been discovered as good overclocking CPUs in a desktop. Not a new CPU model as some people have suggested.
I was posting in this thread but thought it might be better to move it over here as its a more relevant place.

I have put it in my rig currently set to 200*12 with 1.75 vcore.
I havent got it prime95 stable with that yet (although at first i did as it ran for ages before an error), although it seems to work fine otherwise. I did have my fan on a low setting so I am currently leaving it on overnight with case sides off and the fans going like the clappers to see if that was why. Been running for 10mins so far with no errors so fingers crossed ;) .
Current Temps whilst running are now 27C mobo/47C CPU - which is a bit better then before.

On another note i hear someone has reached 3ghz with a prommy now!

I've got one of these too, and on the whole I'm fairly pleased... I'm more disappointed with my other components than I am with my Mobile Barton. :)

I'm having problems with my power supply... it's in need of a +3.3v mod and also a +12v mod. the lines are just too low. To get the max out of this CPU, I'm going to need 3.5v and 12.4v respectively.

My 3.3v line sometimes goes as low as 3.2v and my 12v line goes as low as 11.67v, both way too low for high overclocks combined with stability. I'm sourcing another PSU as we speak, preferably one with adjustable POTs so I can adjust my 3.3v and 12v lines without having to mod the power supply. I'll mod it if I don't get good enough lines. I'm also considering the vDIMM mod on my NF7-S to give myself more chance of hitting say 235x11.5 3d stable.

I'm COMPLETELY prime stable at 2620Mhz at the moment with 2.075v actual vCore.

Anyway, I'm being limited by my power supply it seems, because I can't get to the front side bus's that I could achieve with both my 2800+ and my 2500+. But, I'm stable enough for sandra and superpi at 2706Mhz

and it's 3dMark2001 stable at 2680Mhz, which has brought me the current top score for an Athlon XP & Radeon 9600 series combination.

Sorry for stealing your thread as such, but I feel it's better to keep all of the mobile results together rather than splitting them into millions of individual threads :)

i see your using an nf7-s,can you use 9.5x - 10.5x multis with cpu interface enabled above 226mhz fsb?

my ram is good to 240 @ 2.96v 2-2-2-6 with the 8x multi for superpi... my lines are the problem, 3.3v is way too low (where vDIMM comes from), as is my 12v line (where vCore comes from).

My board doesn't like the D10 bios, so I can't make use of the 10x mutli, but there's no point using the D10 bios because I'd lose a lot of speed to drop down to the 10x multi, Ideally I need better lines to get 11.5x235 stable. I've found this d16 beta bios that I found very fast in the multi range that I'm using (11.5-12.5).

I know CPU-Z is showing your voltage as 2.112v, so I take it it's 2.1v in the BIOS?

If so, then how comes my A7N8X-E only goes up to 1.9v? Surely Asus would know overclockers would need more volts... Is there no way of getting more out of it or am I gonna have to look at changing my mobo to get the best out of this chip?

that voltage is bench voltage, 2.15v (8rdavcore picks that up as 2.125v though, and picks 2.1v up as 2.075v), and I'm on water, so could probably increase the voltage much higher than that if it wasn't for OVP. My temps are around +10/11'C full load on ambient :)

The prime screenie is the one that is 100% stable the other screenshots are benchmark stable. 225x12 kicks out of car high (3dmark01) within 10 seconds which means that my memory is not getting enough voltage, this is down to my 3.3v line being so low

big al you should be fine as the asus boards overvolt and the lines are stable compared to an nf7-s besides your chip might not even like 1.85v+.

bigz i don't get on with the modded d10 bios' either,what i'd like ideally is a d10 bios with the revised dram timings that came with d14 or whatever it was

Hmm, I'm really a n00b at this as most of what you just said is double dutch to me! And since I haven't got water cooling I'm not expetcing to get those high results.

Still, as I've said before, I'll be happy with any increase over my 1.4GHz! :D

My board really gets on well with D22, but unfortunately my XP-M won't post with the D22 beta I was using... I might try some other bios' at some point, I just came to use d16, because a number of people I'd seen using XP-M's were running that bios. I then found a beta which I've found to be faster clock for clock than abit's own bios.

the mobile xp-ms are the best hand picked barton cores specially for the mobile trade as they run at 1.45v which decreases the heat etc needed for laptop use so being able to put more volts through them should give you a better over-clock plus theyre only a few £s more than 2500xp bartons anyway the worst overclock ive heard of a xp-m so far is 2.4 g and thats on air

Just got it delivered... was quite surprised that it had no static protection, was in a little plastic tray and wrapped in bubble wrap. Is that normal? I would of thought that even OEM chips would've been better protected.

That's the way that oem processors come.
btw, another store has just got some mobile chips in but got their stepping codes wrong - theirs are 1.65V chips rather than 1.45v.
Obviously the 1.45V are what you want so be careful.

that little plastic tray a little clamshell thing? If so it's standard, and is antistatic anyway, the only way to get anything more substantial is if you order a retail box, even then it's still in the same tray :)

doe the 2500 mobile work in a normal desktop mobo?

Well i've been abit busy to give the cpu the time it deserves in the last day but i have been playing with it today and it certainly hasnt topped out yet. My Prime stable results so far \o/ are http://www.asck76.dsl.pipex.com/Misc/1st-2500-M.JPG

The bios vcore is currently 1.8v but i think i am having some kind of problems with cooling. Obviosly the lower 3d mark 2003 score was as i was running prime95 at the same time. My psu could also be a problem but i havent looked into it yet. I am seriously thinking of finally biting the bullet and going over to watercooling or even a prommy as i can see cooling be the major problem i am going to have. I would like to make my system quieter too. I guess its worth stating that i mainly overclock to 'get something for nothing' so i am not too interested in buying the most expensive components to reach a maximum. My memory will be a problem sooner or later as is doesnt like timmings other than default - although doesnt mind higher fsb's.

Are u guys sayin that if I was to buy a XP2500 M then I could put it in my A7N8X, increase the core voltage and overclock the bollox outta it!!??

I might consider it.. 2.2 - 2.4 stable with air would be good.. :D :eek:

oh yeah and whatever you do don't buy a mobile Athlon off OcUk as they ordered the wrong chips hahaha - they ordered 1.65v chips (the same as desktop) whereas CPUCITY got the proper 1.45v chips. And yes i hate OcUK as they sold me not one , but TWO dvd drives that dont actually read dvd's. They refused to take the first one back - i threw the second one in the bin. cough. CPUCITy

2.7 gigs on water.....mmmmmmmmmm. I'm buying some liquid nitrogen, so it's time to shoot for 3.3 ghz with the entire system submerged. I might pick up one of these XP-M's to get the best potential.

Oh, btw, any suggestions on LN2 suggestions would be great.

Mine's screwed... anyone running this chip on the A7N8X-E? Would be interesting to know how you did it. I can't even run from my old chip now... think me mobo's borked :(

Big Al - commiserations mate - mine seems to work fine on a NF7-S

Stoo - it came perched on a blue plastic hollow square tray, obviously snapped off a larger tray, with no lid, held in place only by the bubble wrap taped around it. It works fine, but I'm still not too impressed.

I've bought OEM CPUs before (the last two from TCWO and Newegg) and they've always come better packed than that - usually in little see-through plastic clamshell cases. (the one from TCWO was also protected by a packet of swizzlers - that was a classy company ;) ) I'd expect a company that called itself CPUcity would put a little more thought into how they protect the CPUs they send out.

Still, mine works, so its not the end of the world, eh? :D

these new Mobile xps seem good, but my 'ol 0301 xp2100+ does 2.4ghv on 1.8v and air

I also hate OCuK. A moderator hassled me over my sig which was the same as above. Apparently u can't have more than 400 pixels wide. I can't believe they are so @n@l about it. I also had to threaten to contact Barclaycard to help reimburse me after I couldn't get an RMA for a razor boomslang mouse, simply because they ignored emails and their support line was always engaged.

My cpu from CPu city also came in a half of an anti-static container and bubblewrap.

I had a right burn-in today with vcore voltages I normally wouldn’t dare to go near with air cooling but curiosity got the better of me - i needed to know.
I have decided to have it run 24/7 (for now) on:
200x12(2400mhz)
1.825 vcore in bios
27/44C idle temp
33/51C load/max temp

I have been trying to get to 2600mhz with just the multiplier but failed to get it to run stably in Windows. This was even with 2.15 vcore !!! in the bios and 2.7v down the DDR on air too! A weird thing happened too - it blanked all my ZoneAlarm saved program list. I may test more to see if this was the memory borking for whatever reason or as I predominantly suspect heat. My temps at these voltages were 34/57C but I obviously didn’t hang about long enough to test much. The temps on air itself is pretty amazing.
I’m also thinking my PSU is causing probs as a quick look at MBM5 shows:

Although they are not too steady now (2400mhz) they were jumping even more at 2600mhz. I need to get myself a multimeter to check some of them for sure as both the bios and MBM5 give suspect results.

I got the CPU to run fine at 200x12.5(25050mhz) 1.9vcore 29/48C idle but don’t really want to run 24/7 with that voltage & air. I may be persuaded later to stepup as I read more. I really need to clarify that these CPUs can handle the heat/voltage first. For now I can stay around 2500mhz and start messing with the FSB and other voltages.
