Ive never used a laptop can you add memory to the existing memory or do you have to replace the memory.
Also could someone explain what is the express card and what does it do this laptop as a balnk inserted to protect from dust.

ram... ram ram ram ram . will probably be 1x 256mb stick in there with a free slot. either a 512mb or a 1gb stick extra will make all the difference in the world

    Re: slow laptop

also download CPUZ and check the CPU speed
there may be a problem with the speedstep it should be 1.6 ghz with the power cable in and about 600-900 mhz without
I had one recently that was 597/298 and it was very slow i updated the drivers and added 512mb to improve the speed

Erm...you sure that wasn't Ghz? Definitely the 'Core Speed' under the 'Clocks' section? A screenshot would be great.

Dell Drivers. I think that's your model.

    Re: slow laptop

Failing a good memory upgrade what about using a lighter OS? there are some good distros of linux knocking around that are designed for legacy hardware e.g. eLIVE

eLive is rather nice, looks a little mac osx like and its minimum requirements 300mhz and 128mb of ram.

    Also free

    Re: slow laptop

looks like there is not a problem with speedstep so a memory upgrade will speed it up
another trick is to download startup control panel and stop some of the programs loading at starup
some are needed others are not a lot are placed in startup so they load faster but they take up memory also a check for spyware with spybot mite help if it finds anything
