    £200 Computer: Any help?

I am trying to build a computer for someone for £200, for just the base unit itself. So far I have been using Scan to try to get something decent together, and I have come up with this:

    Asus P5KPL - £38
    Intel E2180 - £41
    Corsair 2Gb PC5300 - £27
    250 GB Hitachi 0A35399/OA33423 Deskstar T7K250 -£27
    Coolermaster Elite 340 - £27
    Samsung TS-H653B/DEBH20x - £13
    350W FSP ATX-350PNF aPFC PSU - £23

    Any thoughts or comments?

You factored in the price of an OS or are you going to run Linux?

    Re: £200 Computer: Any help?

What is the system going to b used for? I take it you are going for onboard graphics so I guess gaming is not on the cards? If gaming is going to be something that may happen then either a discrete graphics card or a look at an AMD 780G system (the best integrated graphics available atm) may be more appropriate. If it is just going to be for surfing the net email etc then have you considered the Intel Atom mini-itx boards, not going to win and performance competitions but for web browsing etc plenty good enough and you can get motherboard and processor for less than £60

    Re: £200 Computer: Any help?

If you are not overclocking an AMD based system will be better value for money as you can get a faster processor for the same money as the E2180. Also if it is for general use something like Nvidia 6100 integrated graphics is more than enough for most things. The 780G motherboards do cost more but are better for media purposes.

If you have the free postage offer with Scan you can get the following as many of the items are on Today only this weekend:

    350W FSP ATX-350PNF aPFC PSU £23.49

Asus M2N-VM DVI NF630, Sok AM2, PCI-E(x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX, On Board VGA £35.24

    250GB Samsung HD252HJ, Spinpoint F1, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ £32.65

    2GB (2x1GB) Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC2-5300 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15 £26.44

Coolermaster RC-330 V2 Elite Black Midi Tower Case w/o PSU (New Improved Version) Scan Exclusive £27.61

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ , Brisbane Core, Dual Core 2.6GHz, 2x 512KB Cache, Retail Energy Eff' S AM2 £40.24

    Samsung TS-H653B/DEBH 20x DVD±R, 8x DVD±DL, DVD+RW
    x8/-RW x6, x12 DVD-RAM SATA Black OEM £12.91

    Total cost including VAT:£198.59

The X2 5000+ is faster than an E2180 at stock clocks. If you are running Linux there is an Asus 7050 based motherboard on Today Only which is around the same price as the NF630 one.

    Re: £200 Computer: Any help?

    AMD 4850e X2 ~£40
    ASUS M2A-VM ~£35
    2GB RAM ~£27
    Antec NSK3480 +380W earthwatts ~£55 (ebuyer)
    Samsung DVD ~£13
    Western Digital 320GB AAKS ~£35

~£205 total. That's what I would build. Compact, very cool and near silent.
