Why not read this review.It looks like hardware raid, so will not put any pressure on the CPU (which onboard would). It is also raid 3, which is different to what will be supported on ICH9R (read about it in the like)..
Looks a solid buy at £6
The XFX Revo 64 uses the PCI bus, a bottle neck and will actually reduce performance compared to the onboard ICH9R.
You're better off sticking with onboard RAID, only a PCI-X or PCI-E RAID card could do any better but expect to pay big bucks. However £6 is a bargain and you might as well grab it for future use.
is there more than one of these up for grabs by any chance ?
I use one of these - it works well, and is extraordinarily good value for money considering that they were almost ten times the price when they first came out.
However it is a discontinued and unsupported product, and it still represents a single point of failure on your system, so at that price buy two - just in case - and keep one in its box as a spare.
I use mine on a linux system in RAID1 with two drives and it worked straight out of the box. The only downsides (for me) is that there is no OS software to monitor array status and I can't use the linux tools to monitor SMART parameters through the card. However there is monitoring software for Windows systems.
The other plus is that there is no need for any OS driver - the array just appears as a normal device onto which the OS system is installed.

There's a reason they're so cheap.
Netcell (who make the chip used on the Revo) are gone and it's now several generations old RAID tech.
Modern software RAID can probably compare quite well to a Revo, although loads will be worse during degrade/rebuild.

The firmware hasn't changed for a long long time now and can have problems with newer hard drives.
I have one of the 5 port cards (no longer available) and it's a bit pants anyway. It kept loosing the connection to drives at random, basically more trouble that is was worth.
I chucked mine as it wouldn't see a 1TB drive.
Well, ok, that's a lie. It would 'see' it, when it felt like it and provided the moon was blue. It sounds similar to what Funkstar was saying above.
There is no way in a million years I'd move from a ICH9R to it. The ICH9R is a solid RAID solution in my experience if it meets your needs
