So I'm trying to install Vista and a short way through the setup procedure it whinges about not finding my DVD drivers. I try to load drivers for the JMicron PATA SATA chipset thing and it still doesn't work. (It's an old ish NEC IDE DVDRW drive)Am I the only person this has happened to?
It's an Asus P5B motherboard, so not exactly crap. Vista hardware compatibility my arse

Not sure of any work-around other then using a SATA CD/DVD drive.

Got a more specific error message for us? At exactly what point does it give you the error? Are you booting from the DVD or starting the install from within Windows?
Details about the disc you are using would also help - ie is it a burned copy from msdn, retail, oem etc.
There is no logical reason as to why the drive being IDE would make *any* difference - i've done lots of vista installs on various systems, and none of them had SATA CD/DVD drives.

I've seen this issue many times, always with Vista and a JMicron controller. No version of driver that I have found has fixed it, although any work-around that doesn't involve changing hardware would be nice to know. The problem is encountered when running Vista install by booting off of the disc.

Well I have not tried with that particular controller no - but howard has not specified if thats how it is connected or not, or if there is another option for connecting it up.
There are possible work-arounds if that is the problem though - putting an older version of windows on first for example and then starting the install from within windows. It would also be worth upgrading the motherboard bios if possible, and also taking a look in the bios settings to see if there is an option for legacy IDE mode or similar.
