Quad core temperature...

Just got my X3350 working with P5B Deluxe (Finally the newest BIOS will support it perfectly).
With the TR Ultra-120 Extreme, AS5 and silent mode akasa fan I'm getting 68,65,65,62 degree at stock speed full load 2.93Ghz

I wonder if that is normal temperature?
The heatsink feels like sub-40'C though.

Seems quite high temps for what I'm thinking is a server cpu. Is it overclocked? (I'll go see what it is in the meantime)

If the core temps are that high but the cooler feels cool then perhaps the mount is not very good or you have too much/little thermal paste. My first port of call would be to reseat the cooler and see if that makes a difference, obviously clean off the old thermal paste and apply new.

yeh reseat the cooler. at full load running prime on the top test that would be ok as a max temp after half hour. maybe the fans to low as well if case ventilation isnt very good

I have similar Q9550 , what is over clocked @ 3.2ghz. My idle temp is 32degs , and with a workload it does not rise past 40degs.

It could be a number of things. Re check your thermal paste was nicely spread over the CPU and heatsink as to get optimal conduction of the warm air. Make sure nothing is touching inside the case as this could lead to extra heat being applied around that area.

The only other thing is it could be miss reading the temps. ? ? I have a friend running a Q9450 and he can not get honest temp readings from any app's apart from in the bios.
They state high 50's across the board , but it feels cool and no real heat around the area. His Bios then says 32 degs. ? ?

I am not sure how far this goes accross but its something to be aware of.

I think it might be the mobo misreading the temps. If only the temp readings were consistent across the board like on Athlons and previous CPU's. None of this advanced crap to understand about just a plain simple temp.

Mine idles about 48~51.

I just finished my testing last night. The CPU would easily go to 433x8 which is suprisingly good for my relatively old motherboard.
But then I found out my memory is duff and give out mem error even at 800-5-6-6-15
Will get some new memory soon :S

Run CoreTemp at the same time as four threads of Prime95 and see what temperatures it reports.

If it really is ~65C and the heatsink is cool to the touch resitting the heatsink would probably be a good idea.

I suppose that means that it was spinning at 2,147,483,648 RPM the wrong way. Thats more than 2 billion RPM!!! My CPU temp should be negetave too..

Also for more proof at inaccuracy look at min temp. It was never 1'C

I agree, It has to be a miss read somewhere. That is an excellent cooler Arthurleung has with a very high end CPU. Even at a workload he should not have anything near 50degs.

Arthur could you check the bios next time you boot up please. See if it reports the same as these applications have been. ?

Also another shot here but , I had much higher temps when originally installing this Q9550. My fix was to update my bios to the latest version.
I know its a risky thing and many do not recommend doing it without any need , but i was able to loose 8degs by using the latest version. I see it as maybe better volt management around the board. But i also understand my board is still very new , so what worked for me might not for another user. Try with care if you choose to.

I've got the latest BIOS..

I might try and downgrade one version to see if it makes a difference!

My Q6600 used to idle better than this.

Yeah mine too. Its was much cooler , like 27degs Idle. But saying that it was @ 2.8ghz and not 3.2ghz like now.

Even at stock I still only get 29degs. The Q6600 at stock went down to 24degs.


With the bios i guess its a hit and miss. Never really had much improvement on previous systems i flashed but this latest one was very impressive. I should have mentioned the bios I was using was the very first release original bios so in theory it was going to improve a little.

Just had a thought. Is the ASUS fan controll app running. On my P5Q PRO, it makes the CPU fan run at about 30-40% unless it is over 40 or so degree (personal prefrance cos it is quirter)

I somehow managed to get my X3350 up to 3.5Ghz
Blend Prime95 seems fine for 4 minutes so far, while before it would just reboot immediately.

I just tried reseating my heatsink and the temperature became even worse. Perhaps I'll need to wait until the AS5 settle in again.

Realtemp reads 78,75,69,65 as maximum. And I notices the heatink seems to be slightly misaligned by design. I'll try to swap to the other side of the heatsink tomorrow and see if it helps.

This machine will be the perfect heater in winter

I don't have the Asus Ai Suite installed at the moment since I'm on UMTS and have a tiny allowance (Damn BT I still don't have my phone line activated in 2 weeks :S)

I am quite suprised this board handled the quad core perfectly fine, the problem in my other post somehow disappeared once I disabled static read control (or may be I fiddled with some other values).

Also I could hear my motherboard hissing. Although I'm not going to try any higher I wonder if there are ways to "help" the board? I'll put it to 7x24 use after testing.
