Cheap pc pricing

Just looking to replace a very old computer for a freind as the 1800Xp+ system finally seems to be giving up the ghost after 6 years

Its just glorfied word processor really for use with basic quicken and keeping basic accounts on.

Will be needing a case/psu, motherboard, cpu, graphics card and memory. I can take the hard drive and Cd Rom out of the current system.

Dont need any gaming capability or sound at all

Sorry really bussy sorting stuff out at the moment else would be looking into pricing it up my self, so if anyone can do me a favour or if your bored enough can you do a quick scout and price a system up?

your best bet is an amd system as that would be more than enough for your needs and would be the cheapest option but you didn't say how much you want to spend...

its actually getting a rough price of a cheap base system really, I would not say as cheap as possible because they will want a reliable system given they are coming from a 1800+xp chip they certainly dont need anything of serious speed but then again something better than steam power would be nice too.

You can get a Dell Vostro 200MT (E2180, 1GB, 160GB HDD, Vista Basic) base unit for £165 delivered.

Cheaper by far than any base unit I can build including OS.

Including and OS I think this is the best deal unless the accounting software is incompatible with Vista!

That selection from mikestaff is pritty good, although I will point out that it only has 1 IDE port (which is standard for almmost all new motherboards)
This means you can only have 2 ide devices, so if you have 2 ide hard drives then I'd sugest adding a sata dvd drive to it, they are only £15-18

Saying that the dell looks very good for that price. just be prepared to uninstall the load of carp that comes pre-installed on dells (likr that 1month trial of mcafee and aol internet offer)

That Dell does look pretty good, but it only comes with a DVD-ROM, i.e. not a DVD or even a CD writer. Might be useful to have a burner drive of some description for backups. Or maybe your existing drive is a burner

You could also look at some of the low power systems like the eee box, although a lot of them don't come with optical (DVD) drives.
