    doesn't sound like that TBH.
Usually everything would cut out as the CPU overtemp kicked in.

I managed to fry a 2400xp thoroughbred chip by misaligning my HSF on a coolermaster cpu shim!! beleive me it only takes a couple of seconds to fry!!! ( well mine did anyway )

I'm not using a shim. I do have one though, was on my old Athlon. Should I use it?

Sorry to here of your problems with your new CPU

Here's a video that tells you how to apply arctic silver but it's a good guide even for cheap thermal compound to.
    http://www.xtremods.com/downloads/Ap...Silver-wmv.wmv
And here's a step by step guide for applying it (pictures & text only)

    Good luck

Well my shim quickly went outta the window, if your gonna use it make sure u have the hsf sitting on the core correctly!! mine must have been sittin unlevel on the shim rather than the core ( ah well had to go out and get me a 2500 Barton instead )

I had a problem with my athlon XP 2200+ and the coolermaster X-Dream heatsink & fan.

The problem was the Heatsink was too large and was pushing against my PSU i eventually got it to go on properly(well i thought i did anyway) and i kept having crashing and freeze ups.

Had enough one day and bought a standard Heatsink & fan and when i was taking the old one of i noticed there was a tiny gap (Caused by being pushed against the PSU) and that was causing the crashing.

Replaced with smaller Heatsink and no problems ever since, what im getting to is to make sure that it is mounted properly.

    Once again good luck m8

big al you should leave the battery in and turn the power off at the psu when you clear cmos,i've also found it can take a bit longer than 10 seconds sometimes,i thought i'd killed a mobo before flashing the bios but only after clearing the cmos about 5 times could i get it going

Well, even though I done virtually exactly as that Arctic Silver page says, only applying a small amount to the CPU core, the Heatsink is so damn fiddly to fit. I have a gut feeling that I've fried both chips coz I'm about that unlucky...

And I'm guessing that if I've fried it I won't be able to return it, right?

Well, I just done as the manual said, but I could try that too... Cheers.

Do you have another motherboard that you could try either CPU in? just to confirm that either working or not working?

Does the chip look burnt at all? like on the pins?

Yeah, but my other motherboard is old and only accepts 1GHz CPU's... I suppose I could try it. Pins seem fine, I checked to see if any had bent in the stupid container it was sent in and also after I'd tried it to see if I'd bent any putting it in.

Lot of messing about to do tonight for me...

    A: chill.....we'll sort it
B: its seriously unlikely you've fried both..so lets presume its summit else.
C: if its the BIOS it might need to be left for a lot longer with no power....and also take the psu plug to the mobo off..and leave it for 15 minutes with no battery in either
D: does it POST at all?
E: Hot flash is where you boot one PC up with its good bios in, then take it out (damn hard) then put the buggered one in, and then FLASH using a floppy or whatever...then reboot to check its ok...dangerous old job....I had mine done for me when I overclocked my chip too far and it wouldnt boot at all so I know the BIOS chips are "sensitive" little souls

F: Have you got both sticks of memory in? Take one out and then the other to test if its them.

G: Take everything out and rebuild like it was a fresh build.....start with the bare essentials...

    A. .....

    B. I sincerely hope I haven't!

    C. I've left the power cord in, but switched off at the PSU and taken the battery out. When I get home, I'll unplug it completely for half an hour whilst I have dinner.

    D. No POST at all. All the fans spin, the keyboard lights flash once and then normally Num Lock comes on but it doesn't, Monitor doesn't do anything, GPU fan turns off after a few seconds, no noises, no beeps, no error messages. With either CPU taken out of the board, exactly the same happens but she screams at me there's no CPU inserted (which makes me wonder if it's the BIOS).

    E. I don't have the ability to hot flash as I don't know anyone else with this board and can't afford to buy another just to try it. Besides, I wouldn't dare hot flashing it after the mess I've caused simply changing a CPU.

    F. Both sticks are in, yes. I put them into the dual channel slots too and it booted fine before changing chips.

    G. I have only the bare essentials in at the moment... 1 HDD, 1 floppy, could go down to one RAM stick, take off the case fans too? Swap my 9600XT for my GeForce 2 perhaps?

    Al

Sounds like your heatsink+fan isn't mounted properly. Double check that the heatsink is on the right way around. Twatski here managed to do just that, and could only get his PC to boot as far as the bios, then it would shut down.

Hmm, I'll have a look on Akasa's site for install instrucions as none came with it. I didn't think it could go on a wrong way round..... :edit: Found this. Am sure that's how I was doing it. Will try removing the PSU to get the HSF installed better tonight. I can now see how it would be installed wrongly as it looks to fit over the socket top (sort of a raised bit).

But how would it recognize that it wasn't on right? Or would it get that from the heat build up in the CPU? Would the same thing happened if no HSF is on (not that I'm gonna be stupid enough to try that!)?
