    Fitting A New Processor

Can someone provide me with the steps to fit a new processor. I have built lots of PC's but I have never fitted the processors onto the Motherboard, I would apreciate any help.

And if anyone could also advise me where I left my pen it would be most apreciated

Lift up the lever on the socket, where the chip goes on the motherboard. And then put the chip in - there is a certin design so it only goes in one way, dont force it - then close the lever, until it locks. And seat the HSF carefully, so you dont crack the core or anything. the HSF should have minimal movement.

Don't ask me for help, that's all I'll say...

I'm getting used to the fact I may have damaged my new £70 chip so I don't get too upset if it is.

Here's a guide that includes information on thermal compound
    http://www.overclockersclub.com/overclockingfaq.php

And here's a quote off there site on what thermal compound is..
Due to the machining process used in making heat sinks, just about every heat sink will have a rough surface. To the human eye it may look flat or even feel smooth, but there are microscopic groves in the surface. These groves will trap air between the heat sink and the CPU, and cause a poor transfer of heat. Thermal compounds such as Artic Silver and Nanotherm are used to fill these groves and help transfer the heat from the CPU to the heat sink.

If you buy a Retail boxed CPU with a heatsink & fan then you get a small lump of gunk on the bottom of the heatsink, as long as you dont overclock then that will be suffiecent (And i know AMD retail boxed cpu's have a 3 year guarantee).

But if you want to overclock and\or lower temperature you need thermal compound instead..

Here's a guide to applying thermal compound here..

NB: Also do not confuse thermal paste with thermal adhesive (the latter of which you do NOT want) if you're buying some (i.e. if your processors are not supplied with Heatsink/Fan and thermal goop of their own).

Yeah, I read about putting a small amount of thermal paste onto the HSF base and rubbing it in using cirular motion to try and rub it into the microscopic grooves. Must use good quality kitchen roll though as it's lint free (Zak also mentioned the kitchen roll to me when wanting to clean the HSF).
