    PC building jargon, please explain

It's been a month or two since I've decided to build a pc, prior to that I've would've never considered it as I've bought pre-built or asked someone else to build a pc for me in the past, but I've developed an interest in taking that step, as it's quite fun learning new things & creating something.

My knowledge of pc components are very out-dated, never knew or bothered to know what 45/65nm, pci-e, or sockets are etc?

I've been doing some research & originally decided tobuild a pc. So far, with help & advice from a friend, this was drawn up.

    Windows Vista Premium 64 OEM
    Artic Cooling Accelero AC-S1
    1gb samsung hd103UJ spinpoint F1 harddisk
    4gb corsair domiantor ddr2 pc2-8500 (1066)
650w Be Quiet Dark Power Modular PSU
    Asus P5Q-E Motherboard
    Antec 1200 Case
    512mb Sapphire HD4870
    Intel Quad Q9650
    Optiarc DVD-RW Lightscribe

But after reading & following a few threads & reports from the Hexus forum/website, the release of i7 or nehalem is coming out, which includes features such as energy efficiency in terms of power consumption, heat & hyperthreading/multitasking, I'm tempted to wait till then or after Christmas when prices/inflation goes down.

My main use of the pc are or will be internet/downloading, digital painting, 3d modelling/animating, light gaming (GTA IV, Mass Effect, Crysis, Dead Space), I fancy something that is energy efficient, upgradable (or accesible to overclocking like the user friendly feature provided on Asus P5Q-e) rather than having to splash out so soon within a year or two. Should I go ahead building one now with above specs or wait till i7/nehalem is released utilising ddr3 & mobos that support the new i7 (as from what I've read current mobos won't be able to use i7 and duos & quads will die out) so I have more options in the future, estimated bugdget is around about £1000-£1500 (without tft monitor for image editing purposes)

Any suggestions on alternative pc components are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

That arctic cooler accelero will void your graphics cards warranty. Just to let you know Also if you aren't a confident building that might be quite tricky to fit at first. Perhaps an Nvidia GTX260 would be better as it is quite quiet and cool with the stock cooler.

Your components are nice though, you could save some money with a Q9550. The difference is negligable and you could always give it a light overclock once you were comfortable doing so.

Worst thing ever to fit was the arctic cooler on a GPU. Not to put you off or anything

Thanks for the info about the cooler. From the info on scan about the Asus P5Q-e mobo, it states that it supports crossfire, but correct me if I'm wrong (which I know you will), does it imply that the mobo only supports ATI cards or does support both nvidia & ati, but offers support for crossfire?

it will support either, but it will not let you SLI two nvida cards.. (which is practically void anyway... as the performance benifit from two lesser cards can be beaten by 1 good card... it often works out cheaper too, and is more stable )

Re: PC building jargon, please explain

If you want an after market cooling solution for your 4870 and don't want to void the warranty then look at the Powercolor PCS+ cards, Saphhires Toxic or gainwards Golden sample to name but a few

There are a few options and by the time you have taken into account the cost of the cooler as well these cards with warranty intact make a very good argument for the slightly increased price.

Thanks for the informative input, Taktak & Webby.

If you were in my position, would you build a pc now with current parts or wait till release of i7? I'm still going back & forth in my head about future proofing the pc.

Personally I would wait, it should be worth it.
    No......Not without incident.

Re: PC building jargon, please explain

If you can wait then it may be worth it although I would expect prices to be high, as far as I know on release of i7 the will be x58 motherboards and you will require DDR3 Memory.

If you look at the cost of the current X Series motherboards you will see that they are all over £100 with the majority of the X48's being more than £140 so you can expect X58 boards to be at least that much but probably a bit more at release say the £200 mark. DDR3 will still be expensive compared to DDR2 it is currently about twice the cost so for your modeling animation needs ou will probably be spending at least £150 on memory. Then you have the CPU its self we have no real idea on pricing of these yet but I would be surprised if any of them started less than £200 on release, although you seem happy enough to spend almost £400 on one now so maybe that wont be an issue.

Now all that may seem like I'm against getting i7 but I'm not I just don't think people should wait for it to come around thinking the will be parts available at current midrange prices (motherboards, memory etc) and then be disappointed that they can not afford to get the system, with your budget I don't foresee this being a problem but when people are looking for £500 systems and talking of waiting it obviously is far more of an issue.

Of course the will be cheaper motherboards (i expect Intel will release a P55 chipset even these boards will probably be £80+) but it will probably not happen for a couple of months after release after all Intel will want to make as much as it can from the early adopters (sad but true).

Like mike said switch down to a Q9550 and save yourself £100 or so.
