A 500W PSU will struggle with a GTX 280. I'd recommend a 650W as a minimum. My vote for a case would be the CM-690, it's roomy, understated and has lots of fannage (!).

Re: New System – First Draft

    Hi Rookie,

    Looks like that start of a very nice system you've got there, couple of pointers though;
If it where my build, I'd go for a motherboard with an Intel chipset (P35,45,X38,X48 - my personal preference being with a board from ASUS) as in my experience they are more reliable than their Nvidia counterparts.
That said this means that you won't be able to go for an SLI solution so would only be able to run a single GTX 280.
This is something which I would recommend over dual 9800's in an SLI setup anyways. Although the idea of an SLI setup is pretty cool, they have plenty of problems and your overall performance will be better across the board with a single GPU and the 280 is a beast of a card!
You can always team up a 9000 series geforce with the 280 on a x38 or x48 board and off load the physics processing onto the smaller card which would boost you performance, but only in certain compatible games.

Just my point of view though

nVidias recent announcement means that SLI motherboards shouldn't be needed soon anyway as they are planning to software enable SLI.

Re: New System – First Draft

Well If it was my money I would change the board to a P45 or P35 and go for the 280.
Nvidia chips still run too hot and still expensive.
If you go for the 280 which is a far more sensible solution rather than SLi then you wont need an SLi board.

    Something like this
    Asus P5Q-E £107.72 inc Vat

    Same 280 £246.50 inc Vat

    Seagate 500Gb 32Mb cache
    £43.44

    same ram £65.38

Case kinda big well its huge but great cooling Sharkoon Rebel 12 £66.96

same Corsair PSU good choice £66.85

    And the same CPU £117.37

Some sensible CPU Cooling Xigmatek 120 £22.27

Your budget was a £1000, I assume that includes Vat?

I would invest in a 22 inch widescreen something like the Viewsonic VX2262wm

That brings the total to £926 inc vat and carriage

or you could go with a 24 inch Acer AL2416WB

That would bring the total to £958.17 inc Vat and Carriage
    Space in my skull

Re: New System – First Draft

If this is just for warhammer online as poer your other thread then you really don't need a GTX 280, it is not graphically that challenging. My old 8800gts 640mb handles it at 22" resolutions on max. Grab something like a ATI 4850 or a nv 9800 instead and save yourself a few bob.

Re: New System – First Draft

unless you want sli then i agree with DratUK as the p5q is a very nice motherboard and probably more reliable then a nvidia board. For the case the cm-690 is excellent however i'm not sure of the measurements of the 280 but i have an 8800gt in mine so if its that size then it will fit nicely
Also tho a 280 is overkill for a 20 inch screen so you could spend a bit more on the screen and go for a 22 or even 24... apart from that your gonna have a beast of a machine
