    DDR2 SODIMM laptop memory

This is the current configuration in the laptop:

    DDR PC2-5200
    Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
    Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
    Available Memory Slots: 0
    Number of Banks: 2
    Dual Channel Support: No
    CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz Model 13, Stepping 8
    CPU Speed: 989 MHz

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Am I right in thinking PC2-5300 is better than the 4200? What sort of effect does the clock speed have?

    I'm choosing between the following:

    Scan

    1GB DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2-5300 (667), 200 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered - £12.56

    1GB Corsair Value Select, DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2-4200 (533), 200 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 - £12.87

    1GB Corsair Value Select, DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2-5300 (667), 200 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15 - £12.87

    Crucial

    2GB kit (1GBx2) Part #: CT540955 • DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 - £25.84 (£12.92 per 1GB)

    1GB • DDR2 PC2-4200 • CL=4 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-533 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 - £11.74

I'm planning on getting 2 x 1GB, though it seems as dual channel isn't supported it wouldn't matter if it was just 1 x 2GB in there, but that option is more expensive.

Anyway any advice would be cool. I'm aware of free shipping from scan and crucial have free shipping anyway. This isn't really very urgent but as mentioned on my HDD thread I'm having to replace the hard drive and thought I may as well do this too. The process seems fairly straightforward.

Yes, 5300 is better than 4200. That is the transfur speed of the memory (in mbps i think).
    I would go for this one;

    2GB kit (1GBx2) Part #: CT540955 • DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 - £25.84 (£12.92 per 1GB)

Are you sure that it is not just talking about the currently installed memory, cos it could be that the lappy is compat, just the memory currently installed is not

Some laptops run slower with 5300 in them if they were meant to have 4200, both my inspirons did, and the difference was quite noticable too.

What makes you say the 2 x 1GB over the other one which would be, er 60p or so cheaper? Does the fact it's a kit mean they'll work better together or something?

Firstly, what differance does 60p make really.

Secondly it [b]could[\b] be that your lappy can use duel channel, just the current mem is not compat.#

    Just a could thou

Thanks Will, looks like the end of your message is missing

Point taken, I'll go for the 2 x 1GB then

    Re: DDR2 SODIMM laptop memory

Hey folks, I'm gonna order the memory, HDD and wireless card from scan tomorrow but wondered if anyone knows which of these is better:

    CAS 5-5-5-15
    CAS 4-4-4-12

It's more out of interest, as the CAS 5-5-5-15 comes with the PC2-5300 (667Mhz) memory, which is faster anyway, I was just curious as to what that meant.

Crucial doesn't list any information like that.

    Re: DDR2 SODIMM laptop memory

4-4-4-12 is slightly better (basically response times), but faster MHz beats that (if you don't get what I am saying...PC2-5300 CAS 5-5-5-15 better than PC2-4200 CAS 4-4-4-12, but worse (slightly) than PC2-5300 Cas 4-4-4-12) IF THAT MAKES ANY SENCEoops caps lock. Sorrie
