Need for a new gpu, advice please

ive currently got an 8800gts 320MB (the old one) its overclocked reasonably high and i managed to play crysis at an alright res on mainly medium a couple of things higher and lower at a decent fps. I wanna play warhead at better res etc and actually utilize my 1650x1080 monitor. Anyway, i need a graphics card for around 150 i can stretch higher but only slightly, if by chance the card was on amazon.co.uk i have a 50quid voucher which would be brilliant. i have no pref as to nvidia or ati, just fps for the money. please help me,

    thanks fresh

HD4850/ 9800GTX is a nice step up in performance but if you can stretch to £165 the GTX260 would be awesome for a long time at that res.

There is also the HD4870 at around £180
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-HD-...2289753&sr=8-2

I think I would stick with the GTX260 though, Silent PC Review just tested it and were actually satisfied that the stock cooler was cooler and up to their standards of quiet.. as the famous nodding dog says.. ohhhhhh yes

nah the GTX260 beets the hd4870 in most things IIRC.

i shall try and find the comparison i found last time.

but the GTX's were dubbed as worse as when they came out they were £100 more.. but now they are the same price for better performance (i will be getting one momentarily )

    edit: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14144&page=5
you have to ignore the bang4buck as it is based on when it first came out (after nVidias major price drops ) so it now makes no sense...

the nvid is also quieter with the stock cooler compared to the ati's with stock coolers (cooler aswell)

    Should be backward compatable.

Re: Need for a new gpu, advice please

Yes, pci-e 2.0 is backwards compatable. Your power supply will need to have 2 6-pin pci-e connectors; I'm having trouble finding your exact PSU on the Zalman website but most of the heatpipe PSU's listed seem to have 2, you should obviously check before buying though. Zalman is a decent brand and 650W is more than enough so I doubt there'll be any problems power wise.

You amazon voucher will probably require that you buy from amazon themselves, not a third party seller. If this is the case it might be tricky, because amazon don't seem to sell many of those cards and those that they do are rather overpriced anyway. I would buy from scan and use the £50 towards games or something else amazon actually do good deals on.

The gtx260 seems to offer a very nice balance of raw power, reasonable temps and psu power consumption.

HERE is a review comparing the GTX260/280 against the 4850/4870.

also, i would avoid buying instantly

as they crop up on SCANs today only very frequently so that will save you a few pounds...

(thats actually what i'm waiting for ATM..) or to request it to appear you can email themanwhocan (the email address is at the top of the today only page)

if you havn't guessed.. i would use your amazon voucher for something else treat yourself, a new graphics card and 2 loverly new games to play on it
