Hard drive knackered?
Ive got a 200GB manxtor drive which I use for storage, these past few days ive been having lots of problems, the after a hour or so of use the drive losses its connection and files cannot be accessed, Ive tryed 2 different IDE cables now and experiance the same problem, I think I might have pushed it to hard since the advent of ADSL as its been in use most of the time with downloads.
Gonna run the maxtor diagnostics program on it now to see what that brings up.
Main problem is its the drive from a external unit, I no longer have the external unit so im assuming theres no no warrenty?
Im gonna have to purchase another drive to copy all my files onto untill this drive is sorted, suggestions?, needs to be fast, reliable, long lasting and fairly quiet, was looking at the seagate 160gb SATA, any other suggestions?

I'd recommend the PATA Samsung SpinPoint. Got me one, its a faster drive than any 7200 SATA on the market atm.

Only make of drive I've never had crap out on me is Maxtor, oddly enough, but I've read of many Maxtor failures.
From what I can work out, it's largely luck of the draw as to which batch you get rather than the manufacturer. Disks are manufactured for different companies in multiple factories worldwide, after all.
I've never tried Samsung, but hear good things about them. I have a couple of Seagates, they're quiet, running them in a RAID 0. I've also read that the really big drives tend to go wrong more often, so I'd say 160Gb should be your max.
Well, that was a whole load of nothing advice wasn't it? :D
Samsung or Seagate.

I doubt that in real world terms that there would be a noticable speed difference, plus SATA cables are a lot tidyer :)

only seagate's barracuda 5 uses real sata - all other drives use a particular convertor chip.
