Spare PSU for gaming rig?
Hi guys,
Ther 650W Akasa PSU in my gaming rig -- age less than two weeks -- has decided to kick its clogs and migrate South. The +5V_standby supply is sitting at 0.1V, and the PSU tester won't even light up. So I think it's fair to say that it's dead...
I'm now faced with the unenviable option of having to RMA it through Scan, and based on past experience I know I'll be lucky if it takes any less than two weeks. So I need something to use in the meantime...
The specs of the PC are in my profile, but for the sake of saving mouseclicks, here it is again...
- Intel Q6600, running at stock
- ASUS P5N72T Premium m/b
- 4x1GB Corsair Dominator RAM @1066MHz
- 1x500GB Seagate 7200.10 and 1x500GB Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
- 896MB EVGA Geforce GTX260
- Antec Three Hundred case, two front 120mm Noctua NF-S12 fans, plus stock 120 and 140mm rear fans at "low" speed
- Liteon LH-20A1 DVD Rewriter
Now, I'm within spitting distance of CCL, so driving down there and picking up a PSU wouldn't be a big problem. What I need is a decently well-made PSU that'll run this lot and not cost me a huge amount of money (read: cost about the same as or less than the Akasa). I have a preference for Antec at the moment, thanks in part to a really nice Earthwatts PSU in my MythTV box and the sterling customer service in relation to a faulty jack module on my 300. I suspect I'll probably be looking for something around the 650W mark. Connector requirements are:
- 1x24-pin ATX connector, plus 1x 12V aux power connector (motherboard)
- 2x6-pin PCIe power connectors (GTX260)
- 2xSATA power connectors (HDDs)
- 1xMolex type 5.25 power connector (DVD-RW)
Can anyone suggest something fairly inexpensive that'll get my PC going while I RMA the other PSU?
I was looking at the Coolermaster RP-650-PCAP -- http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...id=rp-650-pcap -- does anyone here have one of these? Any good?
For reference, the Akasa PSU I'm RMAing is the AK-P650FH -- http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=414038
Cheers,
Phil.
Re: Spare PSU for gaming rig?
Hi,
I would say this would be great for you the 620W Coolermaster Realpower - http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=21431
I have had one in the past and never had a problem with it and my system was similar to yours.

Re: Spare PSU for gaming rig?
Enermax, Corsair and Silverstone are the best quality PSUs in my experience.
If you're driving down to CCL, then any one of these 3 PSUs will easily run your system:

Besides being different wattages, the main difference between the HX and VX is that the HX series are modular. The 520HX would be a great choice.

I've just picked up a Corsair 620HX from CCL -- figured a modular PSU might be a good idea. The plan has changed -- the Antec is going to be my spare, and the Corsair is going to be the primary...

Or the 620HX? :)
Thanks,
