removing thermal paste from cpu?
Hi
I'm about to re-sit my heatsink, have an akasa 965 and q6600, just wondering how should i remove the thermal paste on it? I have two bottle of that Arcticlean remover, and will be using mx2 paste, so how do i excatly use the arcticlean to rmeove the paste? im guessing i dont just pour it onto the cpu :P
Thanks
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
No, don't pour it onto the CPU =)
Pour a little amount onto a lint free cloth and gently rub off any residue.
Are there no instructions on the Arcticlean remover bottle?

^ nope no instructions on the bottles, the text is in french :(
I dont have a lint free cloth, so would a tissue do? or even some cotton material from an old tshisrt?
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
I find kitchen roll works well when your in a pinch and need something that's readily at-hand.
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
As Zaphox said, lol
You can also use isopropyl alcohol instead of Arcticlean, you can buy the alcohol at a pharmacists for about £5.00 for 500ml, which will last you a long long time. It's also good for cleaning spectacles and other electronic equipment.
Or if you're a real cheapster, use meths.
PS, yep, any clean dry soft cloth will do.
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
yeah a bit of tissue will be all right, Kitchen roll is better than bog roll
Instructions in English!!!!

Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
I use nail polish remover and toilet or kitchen roll
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
Well I'm back online after rebuilding and cleaning out my the whole of my rig, so much dust
The cleaning was easier then i thought! it was actually quite enjoyable ended up using a nomal kitchen towel/tissue, but putting on the thermal paste was a right old pain, tried doing the line thing that Arctic Silver recommend, but ended up wasting abit of paste cos its impossible to get a perfect thin stright line, so got frustrated and just used the method that AC MX2 recommends which is a small pea blob in the middle! and so far after 10 mins of running the pc the temps have gone down by 5-7c! Will have to monitor what its like in the next few days, but so far so good before it used to idle around 37-42c across the cores, now its 28-35c at this moment in time.
I also discovered why the push pins can be an **** to fit sometimes! If the white bits arent pushed into the holes fully then it wont lock, once i aligned the whit bits properly, it locked into place perfectly and how they show them in the vids!
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
Kitchen roll has never faulted me, i find using number 1 then 2 then 1 then 2 works a bit better than just 1 then 2 of the arcticlean
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
kitchen roll then tim-clean and a coton wool bud has always worked for me
Re: removing thermal paste from cpu?
Kitchen roll here too, definitely get the alcohol from the chemist or online.
I have used little pads from screen cleaning kits too and they were good.
I personally use Roccol Electra Clean, it is not ideal as it dries slower than the alcohol (it was free) but it I notice a huge drop is temperatures whenever I clean my CPU.
I gently and lightly brush past the areas with paste on to remove as much as I can, and do the same if it has smeared elsewhere.
Then I make sure I clean the contact area gently but with a little more force than before until it has a consistent mirror like shine to it.
Make sure there is nothing visible, like fluff etc, and you are good to go.
Check the heatsink too.
