    Surge Protection Extension Block

Was looking at these in Tesco lastnight as wasnt sure if one would be worth the money they were charging, also how does the Phone Line//Broad Band part work and does it compromise the internet connection in any way?

    Re: Surge Protection Extension Block

I think they are worth the money as lightening can damage equipment - they are pretty cheap nowdays.

With regards to phone line/broadband it is just a pass through i.e. connect phone line to surge protector "line in" and connect equipment to sugre protector "line out".

I don't use the surge protector for broadband so can't comment on whether it degrades conenction ( wouldn't have thought it did) but I would have benefited from it as I believe lighteneing cooked my Draytek router!!!

    Re: Surge Protection Extension Block

Personally I think they are a waste of money! Nothing will protect from a direct lightening strike, although they may provide protection against induced surges caused by a nearby strike. However the elements in the protectors have limited life, they will only absorb so much energy, and it is difficult to tell when they are worn out. (Some protectors have lights on that are supposed to give an indication that it is working.

Surge protection is quite complex and in professional installations quite expensive - the cheap version (imho) just don't cut it. The only advantage might be one that offer an 'equipment replacement gurantee'.

With a readership as large as Hexus, there will be someone who has suffered from a surge - but statistically the odds are pretty small (or manufacturers wouldn'yt offer equipment replacement!)

As Peterb suggests... if you're going to get one... pay the extra for one with a 'connected equipment guarantee' - i.e. this 8-Way Belkin Maximum Series, which offers a 'Lifetime Connected Equipment Warranty' up to £175,000

    Re: Surge Protection Extension Block

Hi,that one was on HUKD about a week ago, selling off at Homebase for £10,at least someone got one at that price.I looked & failed,so could end up a wild goose chase, but might get the odd lucky peep.
If you find one,get shop to scan it if not at above price, you never know.

    Cheers BOB
