Price check on a alienware desktop

Sorry in advance if this is wrong sub-forum.

Been offered a comp from a friend, it has:

Alienware aurora case (black-neon lights)
ASOS P5ND2-Sli
P4 3.6 running @ 4 (socket 775)
X2O XSPC water cooling
Hiper Type-R 580W
Gainwood 7800gt 512mb Dual-DVI PCI-E (Gamers Edition)
2x Corsair 1gb XMS2 DDR2 @ 4-4-4-12 (matched pair)
2x Corsair 512mb XMS2 Extreme pro series @ 4-4-4-12 (matched pair)

Having not built a pc in afew years I really have no idea what stuff sells for now.

Next to nothing, those old P4 cores are very very old tech now.

The water cooling kits are still around £90, but without it I'd say £300 MAX, you could build something for £250 that'd be alot better

If you have simple requirements for a PC (email, web browsing, old games), it might be worth offering him £200 for it.

The problem is, for modern games that CPu and graphics card are creaking and groaning, there are a handful of games out there now that would never run on that system as anything but a slideshow - and it will only get worse over time as the PC becomes more and more outdated.

Plus trust me, you will be much more satisfied if you build one yourself according to your needs, now you say you have never done that before. That's okay, you can always ask here, we can spec one for you, you just have to order it, get it put together by a friend if you can't do it yourself, you would like it better.

Na I've built my last 2 PCs myself, so don't have any problems doing it. It was more along the lines of how much it was worth for me to buy it for my bro (x-mas present!), just for abit of casual gaming, nothing graphics heavy. He wanted 300, but I'll offer 200 like some of ya said and leave it at that.

In reply to the person that said £250, I'd have to disagree.

Bare minimum you can spend on a computer and have it working is about £255 (someone made a thread in this forum a few months back.... not me, unusually. I normally make that sort of ridiculous thread) with Linux.

Acceptable standard of computer is about £300-350 (my computer cost me £346 original build, but couple of components got swapped around and upgraded within first few months, so is more along lines of £400)


Asking £300 for this sort of old-tech stuff is asking a lot really.

I'd be questioning whether £200 is worth it...
