    What should I buy? (suggestion)

Right, I was thinking, loads of people come here all the time and ask "is this build ok?", "will these go together" or "whats better, x or y?". We would easily stop this... Every friday we/somebody does a roundup of the best combination of hardware for a certain price bracket, strcitly no posting, just easy access information, I'm up for it, anybody willing to give me a hand?

    Peter.

    HTPC high/low

    AMD + Intel for each
    ATI + nVidia

so you have to spec 18+ machines a week to make people happy, and even then you'll get those saying 'yeah but whats wrong with this' and 'i prefer such and such'

and then you get the people complaining that you can get things cheaper if you go to xy retailer, and that 'this is better' and that 'your all wrong with that spec'.

    blah blah, etc, etc

I think this has been suggested before... some people will look through the forum and can determine what is best for them themselves, others will post a thread with specific needs and staffsmike will be waiting to reply with his cut & paste macro

is an unwritten rule... No one reads the stickies.

Although Madduck says that it is written, just that it's written inside of one of the stickies..

(And yes, this is a blatant rip off of something someone else said..)

Many times even since I have been here and there is the sticky on building a gaming pc - a living document .. guess it's on life support.

Well if we have it up there and someone asks we should just ignore the post (but you guys are too nice to do that I suppose). If someone starts a thread saying spec me a PC with no list of parts they've looked at just asking to be spoonfed then we shouldn't really help them (I think there's one or two around). They shouldn't be so damn lazy to go research on parts to build their pc.

To be honest, I prefer to help the people that havn't got any ideas as those that do can be so stubborn about having particuarly rubbish/stupidly expensive parts

Yes, I can remember reading and following that living document when I wasn't a member here. It was the first thing I looked for now, when I'm in need to build another.

Also, some people prioritise quieter components over performance/price.

Yes I mean if someone new to the pc building scene came and asked for help sure I'd chip in with some advice. But if some plonk comes and posts saying "Hey all I want a new pc, spec me one biatch!"
minus the biatch but it's still how it comes across to me (someone wanting us to do all the work) then no way would I help. But yes I remember the people who are stubborn. Mainly to do with PSU's "Ooh look 1000w PSU for a tenner, bargain!", it was like talking to a brick wall in the "Why you shouldn't get an EZ-Cool PSU" thread.

Re: What should I buy? (suggestion)

Sounds like a good idea! The AMD/Intel and ATI/nVidia should be too much of an issue as the other components will most probably stay the same. It may help if there was some agreement on the % that should be spent on each component - 20% on CPU, 15% on Case, etc. (Please no comments on these %s, I jsut plucked them from the air). That way for a given price point (high/low) it would be easy to find the best AMD or Intel.

I'd definitely take a look at your first attempt and post some (helpful!!) comments...!
