Thats what i would build for under £500 - I'm not sure if it would preform better then the system you have chosen so it would have to be left to the Guru's to advise on that

    Re: help with new build

I would probably go with similar to what Rookie has suggested, but make a couple of changes

CPU: Q6600 only £10 more and I just prefer quad goodness over duel if going for the duel save yourself some cash and get the E7200 (£85) or the E5200 (£56) both are good overclockers, and with their higher multipliers and lower standard FSB have a bit more versitility.

GPU: having recent experiance with Palit's cheap cooling solutions I wouldn't touch that 4850 with a barge pole! Well I might but only to smash the fan into little tiny pieces. So get a different one cost will be less than £120. Or the 9800 GTX+ is a good choice especially for £118 as long as te cooling solution is reasonable...

RAM: You may as well get 4GB as its cheap 2x2gb DDR2-800 will be ample ~£50

    So that are my recommendations

That ram is 17.99 per 2gb stick so its £35 for 4gbjust not sure how good it actually is

the main thing i am not sure about is cooling, will the scythe ninja and case fans provide enough cooling for the suggested hardware

and rookie, thanks for the suggested but i'd like to have the quad for 10 more and i looked at the antec 300 but i don't think the 9800gtx+ fits in it does it?

You could get the Corsair 450W version, the Hiper isn't modular so you aren't sacrificing some functionality, plus the Corsair has 5 years warranty (Scan said they will still help after the 1st year on these) and they are generally much better quality than the Hiper (Hipers have gone bang in the past). It's £4-3 more at Scan and it'll power your system well.

Is the system for gaming or some other specific need? Like Webby said Quad over a Dual anyday.

firstly thanks for the advice i think i will get that corsair psu secondly well i'd like to be able to play some games on it hence the 9800gtx+ but also run virtual machine on it i.e unix/windows server thats the main reason i chose the quad over dual, i mean hey why buy 2 when you can have 4

also i was just wondering since the 9800 gtx+ is scans own brand, im wondering if the cooling will be sufficent on it or not and if its just as good quality than say a xfx 9800 gtx+ gfx card just not sure if the saying you get what you pay for applies here so i would like some feedback if possible.

no problems, I know how good the quads are when running VM's and the ram will help you too
as for scans 9800gtx, it uses the stock/standard/de facto cooler so it should do the job to keep it cool. (Correct me if I'm wrong guys, or blind )

    Re: help with new build

If the picture on scan is anything to go buy it is an Xpertvision or Palit 9800GTX+ http://www.xpertvision.com/main/vgapro.php?id=170 http://www.palit.biz/main/vgapro.php?id=773 both the same company now. I can find no reviews for the card though so have no idea how effective the cooling solution is.

Oh and my earlier comments on memory were modifications to Rookies spec not your own, and yes the Ninja 2 will be sufficient to cool the Q6600.
