    No ideas about printers..!

    Hey guys,
i am thinking about getting a printer and don't know anything about them. i was looking at this one:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=876324

Is this an ok printer? i just want one to print fairly quickly, and the ink to be a solid black and reasonable cheap toners.

with the one that i linked, what kind of ink cartridge does it take? im not sure if its called a cartridge or toner? and more importantly do scan sell it?..

    thanks for all your help!

    Re: No ideas about printers..!

I have a Samsung mono laser ( older model than your link) and works fine. Has centronics and USB connector. Print quality though good is not as good as an HP

The other issue is cost of cartridge - as you can see it is almost same as the printer. This is becase drum and toner come in the same package. Mostly toner is used up bfore useful life of drum so its a waste of money.

I suggest you get a mono laser from Brother which lets you chnage drum and toner separately.
What I do is use after market kit that lets me top up the toner in my cartridger ( for about £10) without changing it till the drum wears out.

Most lase printer mechanisms are made by only a few companies ( e.g. Canon make all the HP ones)
If you want top quality printing get a Canon laser or HP such as this one

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140044 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133587

if you want low cost per page, then get a Brother with separate toner and drum capability ( initial cost may be higher)

    Re: No ideas about printers..!

I recently bought a Xerox Phaser 6110N Colour Laser printer (seems to be a rebadged Samsung) from Insight. Worked out at £64 with an additional free Black toner from a mail in offer.
The N means it can be used as a network printer if you want ie just plug it into a router with an ethernet cable and any pc on the network can use it.

There was a promotional code that got money off think it was 'XRP 2' which gives £36 off the original price.

Free Toner claim form here. print it off fill it in then mail or scan and email.

Insight site seems to get a bit confused over stock levels and is now saying to phone to order! I ordered when it showed out of stock and the printer arrived five days later!

    Link to product.
I'd phone say you were expecting to get the £36 off and pay £64 and see if you can still get one.

For the free extra toner all you need is an invoice and the form.

for this product i will get a free toner for the first time right? and i can order them thereafter? also will t hey always make this kind of toner because i think i will be keeping this printer for a while to print lecture slides etc. with regards to changing drum etc. i dont actually know what that is probably useful if you printing large numbers of paper?

If you meant the Insight Xerox offer, its a question of if the offer is still available over the phone.

If it is then what you get is the Printer complete with toners, thats a black toner and the three colour ones. No connection cables though so you need to have either a USB or ethernet cable depending on how you connect them.

Having bought the printer you can then send off the form I linked to which will get you a further Black toner for free.

Things to be aware of (with all printers not just this one).....

They are often supplied with less ink/toner than when you buy a refill. (The Xerox comes with a 1500 page Black and 700 page colour)

The replacement Toners are available from a wide range of suppliers but aware they cost more than printer did! Around £30 each so four cost you £120

You can refill toner yourself on a lot of printers. for the Xerox this item on ebay refills all four for £50.

A lot of people don't bother replacing/filling toner they just buy a new printer as its cheaper! And a lot of people bought several of these Xeroxs just to use the consumables from them.

It largely depends on what you use the printer for.

These lasers are good for light use and you can leave them a while between uses without problems. Inkjets tend to dry up if you leave them a while meaning new cartridges before they're empty.

The lasers won't be as good at Photo printing, the output is good but won't quite match a photo inkjet printer.

Black text will be best with a Laser.

    Hope that helps.
