    Is there such a device?

That I can plug into the network between a PC and a power outlet that'll let me turn off the power to the PC.

    Reasoning being.
We have an old CCTV box in the roof of our old building.
About once a week it locks up and needs power pulling and plugging back in before it works again.
Now as were not based in the old building anymore this isnt as simple as it once was, so I want to be able to essentially switch the PC off at the wall and then back on again but via the network.

    Something like http://www.remotepowerswitch.com/web...ercontrol.html ?

EDIT - maybe one of http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=5337 given that you're UK based AFAIK

Some of the X-10 home automation products might be of interest as well, but this won't be an all-in-one solution, you will usually need a socket module and a control module which provides the net interface. It will probably end up being pretty expensive either way. It would be far more economical to resolve your PC issues properly, my first guess would be that it's overheating given that it's in the loft/roof, so maybe add a couple more fans in there...

Its not heat related, sometimes the camera's lock up and the only way to get them back again is to pull the power and then put it back so its not really a machine fault per say...

Oh right, in that case what about a timer switch that's set to turn off and back on again at an obscure time once a week or so? Would be a cheap workaround.

Re: Is there such a device?

True, but if you reset it at regular intervals it's usually less likely to go wrong - I do the same thing with my wirless router in the loft, It used to stop working around once a month but I time a power cycle once a week and it's now reliable.

The alternative is to shell out for one of the devices mentioned above or get a more reliable camera.

we use an APC rack mount UPS with web based control, it allows you to kill the mains and power back up from home

handy when a game server craps out.
