What cable?

Well im wondering what cable should i use for a monitor? im having issues with nvidia drivers while using a dvi--> hdmi cable, monitor has s video/component/hdmi/vga and some others... any ideas? ill try and pick up one from pcworld later today.


Stupid nvida >.<, my 8800GTS worked fine but nooo the 9800GTX has to be picky.

edit: What is the 3way cable that comes with the card? what connections does it need?

If you're not using sound through the monitor, then I'd use a straight DVI-DVI if the monitor can take that.

If it doesn't, then simplest would be DVI-VGA adaptor and VGA cable, if you're having driver problems with HDMI.

just looked for cables and god when did they become &#163;20?? . Im goin to try my 8800GTS in a few just to double check before i make any purchases.

What kind of issues? My 8800GT had problems running dual display with one DVI > DVI monitor and the other DVI > HDMI as when the HDMI monitor was on it shuttered the mouse.

Fix was to swap what DVI port the HDMI monitor was on the card to the bottom one (closest to the slot).

Its just a singlke card and single display setup, without drivers its ok apart from huge graphical lag(i can set to max 1680x1050 res) but when i install ANY gfx drivers it forces me to a max of 1000x720~ and anyhigher will give me no signal unless its set to 1900x1080(my screen=1680x1050) and on the 178 drivers it refuses to show a signal as soon as windows loads. Im goiing to change my bios version to make sure its nothing stupid like that.

Edit: well i checked with the other card, works fine and a new bios/older one did nothing. Its down to the gfx card/drivers now, its getting enough juice because i put it on 2 seperate connections(2rails). So confused, any ideas?

Have you tried as suggested the other DVI port? You never know! If your card comes with a component output try that (red, green, blue) just need 3 AV phono plug cables can use an old video and stereo audio (yellow, red, white) to test just remember to plug the same colour in each end

well i tried that and no luck(the other port), put card back in again and back to square one. Currently in safe mode just to use it, the card came with the red green and blue output cable but i dont have any cables to connect it to the pc lol. Ill try s-video quickly....

Have you tried removing the monitor from device manager and rebooting? If it's stored incorrect info it may help.

aha, thank god i havent sold this crt..... it is NVIDIA DRIVERS, it recognises the tv as aHDTV(since it uses hdmi-->dvi cable) so it is sticking to the specific resolutions, 720p and then 1080 hence why higher than 1680x105 is working(just), now i just need a way of killing that stupid thing. Before on my 8800 it said HD over dvi or something now its just HDMI connection, currenlty have it in dual screen with my crt and it looks shocking at 720.

Any more ideas?XD

They've always been £20 from places like PC World/Comet, but somewhere like ebuyer will sell you them at a reasonable price (about £3 for a 2m dvi or hdmi cable).

So would there be a way of using a digital cable? my tv doesntr have a a dvi connection(accepts it by hdmi) so all i can think about is vga which would make it look worse than dvi right?

Well the VGA signal quality is slightly lower (due to the digital to analog conversion and then back again to digital) but if you would actually notice the difference is questionable would certainly be better than no picture at all!

Google search for DVI to VGA cables or you could get a straight VGA to VGA if you already have the adapter

Thanks webby, the tv has vga and i got an adaptor that came with it so shouldnt be a problem. Will see if i can get one from work or from pcworld(if i can find one on amazon etc).

Would it be likely nvidia sort this out soon? so annoying.

Gold plating the connectors is only any good if the cable is actually any good, oh an if your worrying about connectors then getting a DVI to VGA cable will be better as the will be 2 less contacts.

Either way for &#163;6 I wouldn't worry about it gold plated or other wise.

Im confused now why it changed from vga to dvi if there is little difference, am i just missing something? bandwidth on the cables or something, vga can provide 1680x1050 correct?. Will try and get one from work.
