Hi all,
Can anyone here help me with a little something.
Are the new mobo's for the new Intel 775 sockets going to need new cases ?
I think I have read some where that the new 775 mobo's will need a BX or BZ case ?
Will the first 775 mobo's be shipped for ATX cases ?

Please forgive me if I have got the socket numbers and case letters wrong, I'm just blastin this off the top of my head. I'm sure you all know what I mean

I think it will probably still fit in ATX cases... the screw holes on the mobo tray may be different, so you may have to drill some more...
You will need a new psu aswell. The BTX psu's have 4 extra pins on the connector. If you have a decent ATX psu you can easly mod it to work as BTX.
Im sticking with ATX for a long while. AKA untill I get enough money to switch to BTX
BTX will require a new case and new psu.
Any ideas on how much it would cost?
i should imagine you will get both btx and atx versions atleast for this next chipset anyway (alderwood and grantsdale i believe) but i suppose it depends on how the market reacts to btx and what the takeup of it is as to how long atx lasts
Dont quote me but from what ive been reading it looks like BTX only, the new boards are using new PSUs (obviously) but with the new BTX PSU is the addition of a larger motherboard power connector which provide more power think its another 12v rail. As such i think the BTX boards and new CPUs need this, another Intel All or Nothing design.
Cant say the concept behind BTX is a bad idea, finally GFX cards will have there heasinks pointing the right way for best thermal conduction. IMHO this is the way it should have be designed with ATX
i seem to have forgot to mention that CWT550W psus (at scan) aka antec truepower psus, use the BTX conenctor, and are supplyed with BTX->ATX converter (has 4 pins less...)
The extra pins used (in no order!) are BLACK (COM/ground), ORANGE (+3.3v), RED (+5v), and YELLOW (+12v). So its nothing special and can easly be modded assuming you find a way to connect them, which can be done many different ways, inc just shorting the right solder points on back of mobo which is the way id do it, req much less effort than cutting up atx connectors...(make sure the connection can take the current that will pass through it!).
Also I *think* that the mobos will all have BTX connectors - not a bad thing, as normal ATX conenctors will probably fit in the BTX socket anyway, or should do, witht he tabs on the sides broken off....

Does any one have a link to the BTX spec? Id like to know about the changes like gfx card other way up etc...
I'll see if i can dig a link out, its on intel website somewhere. Basically the motherboard will attach to the case on the LEFT hand side as opposed to ATX which is on the right. CPU socket is on the front edge of the motherboard. Totally incompatible (case wise) with one another. Of course im sure someone will mod a case to suit

The first boards won't need a new case.. it will be a fairly quick transition though - I wonder how long Shuttle will keep their native format?
You will need a new PSU however - but some vendors have found a away round it.
It is going to cost cash to make this jump

I'm planning to build a new system once BTX is released and the PCI express comes into play.
Its going to take me at least 3 months to acquire all the bits I'll need for my new system.
I am pleased I dont have to pay for the bits :)
I'm pleased I'm not running Intel systems ;)
