8 Pin CPU Plug Confusion with P5Q Deluxe?

I'm after some clarification with the 8 pin questions i have. I have done some googling and 75% of the answers say that just the normal 4 pin connector can be used in an 8 pin socket with no adverse effects. The other 25% say it can be very harmful to the mobo.

At what point is the extra 4 pin needed, is it just for Dual CPU mobo's and big Skulltrail like systems?

I'm soon to be getting a P5Q Deluxe, and need to know if i'll need an 8 pin plug or not!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: 8 Pin CPU Plug Confusion

Most motherboards have the extra 4pins (on the 8 pin socket) plugged so you can use a 4 pin in them. It all depends on what your motherboard manual says.

My manual states you must use the 8 pin one so using a 4 pin one is a no no.

Re: 8 Pin CPU Plug Confusion

The P5Q Pro just recommends a PSU with the 8 pin connector, if you only have a 4 pin then you have to use that. There is a little plastic cap that covers the other 4 pin socket if you don't use it

Re: 8 Pin CPU Plug Confusion

Thanks for the info guys! Think i'll alter the title of this thread to attract a few more Asus users, hopefully someone with a P5Q Deluxe can shed a little more light on this for me then!
