Dont want none of these dual memory bourds as i just want DDR3, also i have a nvidia quadro fx4600 which will need to be able to go on to the mobo.

Re: building a new rig - need help

What's the point of the DDR3 it has no benefits on a core 2 based rig even when overclocking and especially when overclocking a 1066MHz FSB chip.

Save yourself some money and get DDR2 with something like this
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=818514

That would also do nicely for DDR2

They are a bit thin on the ground in the sub £100 market.

Things like the Asus P5Q-C and slightly older P5K-C take both DDR2 and DDR3 which you said you wanted to avoid, other than that I'm out of ideas.

There will be more mainstream DDR3 boards in the coming months due to i7's release.

I don't know what RAM to suggest if you want DDR3.. as cheap as you can get from a decent brand I suppose.

But for me I would get,

    4GB PC6400 Corsair XMS2 ~£50 (often £45 on scans today only)
This is enough to overclock a Q6600 to 3.6GHz without overclocking the RAM.

    Q6600 ~£120

ASUS P5Q-PRO (or P5Q-E for a few extra features)
    or this DFI

Re: building a new rig - need help

    We don't

No seriously we do not suggest you get DDR3 for using with a S775 CPU the minimal gains in performance are not worth the extra cost for the memory.

But if you really want to...
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=847359

The only advantage I can see in buying DDR3 is that if you upgrade to a new MB and CPU you would already have the memory, the problem with this is that if your buying a quad core now you will not be upgrading for at least a year, unless you upgrade regularly which since you are just thinking of going to quad now I guess you don't.

Then we get to the false economics of it all you can buy 4GB of DDR2 for £50 that will happily run a Q6600 upto 3.6GHz (or even 1066MHz memory will only cost you £75) to make it worth while you are going to need to buy DDR3 1600 which will cost you £135 for 4GB so the questions are do you think that by the time you upgrade again DDR3 memory will need to be faster than 1600MHz and will the price of the memory have dropped by the £50 you spend on DDR2 now?

You could also buy a cheaper motherboard the Asus P5Q Pro is ~£90 and you could easily find a good board for closer to £80, potential saving of £20 meaning will the price of DDR3 have dropped by £30 I would think it very hard to imagine that this would not happen especially in a year or maybe even two years that a Q6600 system will happily run for you.

    Only 2 slots for DDR3 or DDR2....
I can see ram upgrades being very expensive in the future

2 slots for 1 type of ram ain't much, espsecially for a £100 board.

Well alright, I don't see any 4GB DDR3 stick out yet and most likely it'll cost the earth so currently all you can get on the board is 4GB. I suppose if it fills in your criteria then it's okay, waste of money but okay

    Problem there too
32bit OS can address 4gb Total, that includes everything ram, gpu, other peripherals etc. So you won't be seeing the full 4GB unless you get a 64-bit OS. Just so you know, if you did then sorry for repeating it

Re: building a new rig - need help

Ok then guys im very greatful for all the help and as you guys are saying its not worth getting DDR3 mb yet ive been looking into some DDR2 ones. This
MB has court my eye and i was wondering what you guys think.
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ASUS-P5Q-IP45-...d=p3286.c0.m14
it is around my price range and also it can take higher DDR2 which would be better for me. Also what would be best out of a Q6600 or a Q9450 for overclocking.

Depends on how much you want to overclock, and that motherboard is good, just don't get it from eBay get it from a retailers site.
