    Still having problems...

I'm sure this computer is just meant to fail =S

    basically where i got to......

i finally managed to install vista, but taking out my brothers hd and putting mine in his, and using his components to install it, then put it back in mine. fine.....worked....

so i got vista running. so now i wanna install all the mb drivers, utilities, gfx card stuff etc....

2 problems; 1) the dvd drive doesn't seem to read anything....i've tried 2, both work normally, none on this system, and i have no idea why =S they worked to boot from the disk to install vista, so now why not ;x

so i went onto the net to dl the mobo drivers, and i try, and it gets half way then tells me there's an unknown error, so it will exit.

so i'm pretty stuffed....i mean, i can't use the computer without installing the drivers tbh can i, and basically having no disk drive =S

and also, every so often the system just turns off....poof....have no idea why =S maybe a faulty psu... (or not, apparently)...

    sorry i ramble, so to sum it up;

    1) dvd/cd drive not working? ;s
    2) apparently an unknown error which stops the installation
    3) system just turns off sometimes

    Thanks again :{ <3

    Re: Still having problems...

List your system specs please. The best way to sort this sort of problem is to go back to basics and built the PC outside of the case using the barest minimum of components. One stick of ram, hard drive, cd/dvd drive. Boot and see if you get as VGA failure beep or error. Turn off. Put in the graphics card connect to monitor and boot into the bios. See motherboard manual (should be the "delete" key).

    Re: Still having problems...

surely i wont need to go down to that again, if i've already done that once? it's not like it wont boot, i mean i can get on the computer, onto vista, onto net etc....but it doesn't work properly.

but my specs are this anyway:

    proccy is dual core E8400
    650W Corsair psu
    4 gb corsair ram ddr2 (2x2)
    leadtek 260gtx gfx card
    abit ip35 pro mobo
    22" mon

think that's all i need to say :?

    Re: Still having problems...

Is your brother's pc modern enough for you to test your components in his pc one by one?

Also I'm assuming you've tried different SATA cables/ports (and power connectors, may as well) for the disk drives?

    Re: Still having problems...

    right.....

i've installed windows xp, so i'm using 3.25 gb of ram....but i don't mind so much. it's 'working'

still some problems....the cd drive worked once...now it won't show again, in my computer or in device manager.......is there some kind of underlying problem here?!

so it makes things harder without a disk drive to take things off a cd ;x

    anyone help?

    Re: Still having problems...

If different drives don't work with different cables on different OS's then the motherboard is the only thing left that can really be the weak link. If you got it working once then I guess the hardware isn't completely shot, corrupted bios perhaps? Just guesswork mind.

    Re: Still having problems...

A least the first two problems are round the DVD. Which DVD drive do you have? Is it SATA or IDE? Have you tried changing the cable and/or the motherboard slot? Is it whirring up? If not try a different power cable. Make sure all these cables are properly inserted. Maybe you can take a picture of your motherboard as it stands?
