    CRT Monitor - How much?

My body, eyes and head refuse to get on with the LCD screen I have now. I don't seem to like them full stop!

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...ease-help.html

Quite a serious issue. If I was to go down the road of buying a CRT monitor, can you still buy them new? Also, would there be absolutely no problems running it through a 9600gt with the DVD to VGA converter on the cards end?

    Thanks.

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

You can still buy them what size are you thinking? Dont forget the larger the screen the deeper the monitor casing as well.

Prices range from £50 up, don't forget to check what resolutions are possible and what refresh rates at those resolutions (higher is definitely better here) no point in moving to a CRT to have it stuck at 60Hz and have it flickering giving you headaches.

If I had thought anybody would have wanted it I would have kept hold of the couple of 20" CRT's we had laying around gone to be recycled now though and you could have ha them for nothing (well apart from the delivery of course!)

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

17" to 21" - 19" would be good as that is what I used to have, but as you were saying more important is the quality and refresh rate.

My old screen used to run at 120hz 1024x768 which I thought was excellent, it did 100hz on 1152x864 (which was default for me). 800x600 was 140hz though thats a low resolution for a 19". Above 1152x864 I can't remember the values exactly but I think it managed 1600x1200 on 75hz, but possibly 60hz - I never used that one anyway. I don't think the Geforce 2 MX at the time support a res higher than that. The monitor was a Mitsubishi and of great quality (imho).

Are those realistic values for a casual/decent CRT monitor?

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

Can't see any problems using the DVI-vga adapter then a cable, that's what they are bundled for.

As for buying, have you considered second hand. You'll want something decent with a good refresh rate as Webby says, but check the local paper or even freecycle and you might get lucky.

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

Worth checking ebay, a big 20" + CRT is difficult to post due to weight, so many are pickup only and are cheap. Contact seller early on, go around and have a look at it, and offer what others have sold for. Do it all early and the seller can cancel the auction and save money. I run a big sun 22" monitor, still going strong after 3 years with me, and however long the previous user had it.

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

Or check out freecycle. I've given away loads of monitors on it. Theres usually a new screen on each day - or you can make a request. You just need to go pick it up. (Unfortunately I chucked a away a top notch 21" CRT I had as I didn't think anyone wanted them any more.)

Edit - I do have a 19" Dell screen I don't want that I've just remembered. Free If you want to pick it up?

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

Just rang my local shop, they have a new and boxed 17" sampo/difusion for £40!

I hope that it supports a hz above 70 on the desired resolutions. Surely? Will be going to check it out very soon.

Edit - here is what I (assume) it will be like.. What do you guys think?

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

not worth buying a new one when 21-22" CRTs go for virtually nothing on ebay etc.

17" would be VERY small, since part of the screen is hidden by the bezel, making it effectively 15-16"

I use a pair of LaCie 22"s. Only downside is depth of casing.
One can never stop saying Thank You

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

I`ve got an old 17" Iiyama 1403 lying around at my parents, was only used for about 18months until i got my dell lcd, same offer as the the poster a few above, free if you are willing to pick it up, i have no need for it.

Mind you, you are in Reading, bit of a trek to come to Cambridge to pick up a monitor.

Fair play fuddam, but 17" isn't that bad. Even if it's only a temporary attempt at a solution, £40 isn't so bad. My parents would be much happier me buying it from the shop - the fact it's new is good, monitors can deteriorate quite badly and buying one online/from Ebay 2nd hand would require research and a gamble. I first need to establish there is 100% a problem with me and LCDs due to the backlight (and whatever else if there is anything.)

Thanks for all the offers once again...

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

Buying a boxed and new one can involve a gamble too ..... especially if it's an unknown make. But, if you're buying a top brand, like Eizo, you at least know that what you are buying was, at one point, a top-class unit.

There it is (I think).. Looks okay to me.

    "Vertical Frequency in Hz: 160
    Vertical Resolution in Pixel: 1024
    Vertical frequency (MHz): 160"

Hopefully that means refresh rate won't be an issue?

Re: CRT Monitor - How much?

The CRT won't be limited to 60hz on Vista or anything stupid like that will it?

If it is limited in any way, are there ways to force it on Vista?
