    I want a Nehalem / Core i7 system.

    As per the title.
The problem is money, and a lack of it.

I've already seen this question posed a couple of days ago to Scan, but they are under an NDA.

I will be needing to get a new motherboard, CPU and RAM, and keeping current other bits of my desktop. I currently have a 939 Athlon and thought about buying a current Core2Duo, but think i'll hold off providing i can get a bottom of the range i7.
Does anyone have any ideas about motherboards coming out?
My hope / assumption is that they'll pretty much cost the same as current P45's etc, but i can't be doing with any of that X58 £200 nonsense.

PS I'm quite enjoying this read at the moment on the specs:

You'll have to wait a year and get the P55 with the Lynnfield varient. Until then it's just going to be Bloomfield with X58 and associated costs.

Indeed. This is why I bit the bullet last week and purchased my new system which is based on a Q6600, DFI board and 4 Gb DDR2 memory.

    Re: I want a Nehalem / Core i7 system.

I would deffinatly wait for this.. you are looking at £500 for CPU/RAM/mobo minumium.

If you need a new PC buy everything you want for i7 build apart from the i7 bits.. for which replace with something like an

    E5200 ~£55
    cheapy P31/P35 or even a G31/G33 (uATX) ~£40 - £60
    and 2GB PC5300/6400 ~£25 - £30

It will perform better than you might expect and will certainly tide you over until P55 etc.. and the older cpu RAM etc.. will still be worth a few bob to sell on.

Hey come on! I know StaffsMike does alot of speccin', but i think even he'd agree i know what to do.

No, it sounds like i7 is not for me now. I suppose i wanted to know if anyone had heard of some mainstream stuff coming out shortly, or whether it was top of the range only.
Never mind, i'll go C2D for now.

    Re: I want a Nehalem / Core i7 system.

    Go with Staffsmike

You could get a get OC on the E5200 with a Cheap Gigabyte P31 or G31. Just remember you can only effectively use 2 of the RAM slots on a P31 board so make sure you buy all the amount of RAM you want on 2 sticks

I don't know whether your Current XP licence is OEM or not, but since you also use Ubuntu you wouldn't have any second thoughts about having to pay to put a £50-60 Vista licence on a cheap motherboard

    Re: I want a Nehalem / Core i7 system.

The i7 Systems are gonna be getting a lotta lovin'. But they are going to break the bank for a while. Maybe next year they'll be competitive on a bang per buck level, but go with the recommendations here and get a good value system for now
