    New rig advice

Well ive been trolling around the usual places trying to get an idea of what the best hardware would be for a new rig ( including monitor 22"/24" ) on a slightly tight budget of £700. It would be used pretty much solely for gaming, the Q6600 looks like the processor most people recommend and the 4850 ATI also looks like the best "bang for buck" GPU.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the specifics of a motherboard/monitor/cpu/gpu etc etc. Pretty much all of it apart from a case, psu ( i am assuming my 580 watt Tagan is still fine ? ) and sound card =).

Any help people can throw my way is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Sean.

    Re: New rig advice

Well I wouldn't get a Q6600 it it's soley for gaming I would get an E5200 pentium dual core for £55. Even at stock (2.5GHz) it's more than enough grunt for any modern game and overclocking will give you 3.5GHz or over.

Throw a Xigmatec 2183 cooler or something like a scythe ninja 2 and for £70 or less you're off to a good start.

Lot of nice boards around at the moment, my personal choice is the P45 chipset and either the DFI
    http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=884418

    or Asus P5Q-E
    http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=818508

RAM wise, for the E5200 or Q6600 you're looking at PC6400 really, that offers great bangs for bucks overclocking or not. £45 will often get you 4GB or Corsair XMS2 from scan.

Then for 24" gaming the HD4870 would be nice or the GTX260 from Nvidia. Or for 22" the HD4850 will be perfect.

For a Hard Drive I would get the Western Digital 640GB Caviar Blue (formally AAKS) which is fantastic value for money at £45, one of the fastest quietest drives out there.

    Re: New rig advice

Hi and thanks for the reply,

Would a E5200 really be enough for games like crysis and future titles ?

And for a monitor do you have any recommendation for 22" and 24" versions ?

    Again thanks for the help.

    Re: New rig advice

Well there are two stages of thought on the E5200.

The first is.. yes it is.

The second is.. It's £55.. like a throw away chip

In all seriousness though there are some pretty thorough reviews showing that in high res gaming the CPU counts for very very little after 2.2Ghz on a dual/quad especially if it's intel.

Given that the E5200 has all that breathing room for overclocking you will be fine for ages on that chip

It depends really. Do you want it to be just a PC monitor, do you want to plug consoles..freeview/dvd boxes etc.. in?

Essentially you will get an awesome 22" within budget or a more mediocre 24". It depends whether the resolution counts a lot for you.

    Re: New rig advice

I have to admit i am torn on what size monitor i would like. I play a lot of FPS games and have found when trying out other peoples monitors that 24" seems a little too big but id really like the flexibility of displaying full 1920 x 1200 games which sort of dictates having a 24" screen.

    Re: New rig advice

Well I'm hearing quite good things about these
    http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=26633

Not quite 1920 x 1200 as it's 16:9 so it's 1920 x 1080 (1080p). Not bad for the money and you can fit all the components I have mentioned in with that monitor.

If you your requirements were less skewed towards gaming you might consider the Dell 2408WFP which is a huge part of your budget (£380 ish) but it's an awesome monitor. You would probably need a cheaper motherboard and a HD4850 to get anywhere near on budget though.

    Re: New rig advice

May I suggest the Samsung SM245B available from eBuyer for £260 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130991 brilliant monitor and a good price for it.

If you can stretch up to £306 the Hyundai W240D-PVA is a very good value PVA monitor with all the inputs you could ever desire http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138449.

The reviews aren't that great and there is some sort of problem with strange lines being displayed on these last I heard.

The samsung gets good enough reviews though.

Just put my ideas into a picture.

If you use scans today only prices and get free delivery which you will at 20 posts here.. almost band on £700.

I used the GTX260 but the HD4870 is the same price on scan (for the asus model).
