Sharkoon Quick Port = Hard drive @ 48C

I have one of these. It makes hard drives hit 48C (Seagate & WD). Surely that is dangerous... Is something wrong with it? Could it be overvolting the drives? Or is it just because there is no cooling with this? Is there any way to make the drives run cooler?

Sure. Airflow. HDDs only need a very very slow fan blowing a tiny amount of air over them to keep them nice and cool. You can make simple fan mounts from spare bits of wood and some screws/glue.

But other fanless external hard drives do not suffer from this...

External enclosures normally have the drive screwed to the enclosure so it can act as a heatsink, which cools it down a bit (not a lot, though).

Fans are pretty much essential for HDDs, and yes, I know about the Google study.

Take a look at this addition to the same kind of enclosure as yours...

hmm interesting mod... I wonder how it is powered...

Its quite annoying because the idea of this quickport thing is really good but I am afraid to use it for more than a few minutes at a time!

48c is pretty much nearing max temp for a hard drive is it not? Are you testing 3.5" drives right? I got a ****ty one in a cramped 2.5" enclosure made of alu but it never gets warm during use. Always the 3.5 inchers get hot.

Is that the one that says (sensible) heat doesn't cause mechanical hard drives harm?

Re: Sharkoon Quick Port = Hard drive @ 48C

Hi,seen plenty of posts were recommended max temp of a HDD is 55oC,you even see it on manufacturers websites. Can't remember, but i'd assume this is for continuous use.
Nearly sure iv'e seen 60oC quoted for some of the latest ones on a manufacturers site.

Just bought Akasa P2STON Ex Enclosure fron Scan, the extruded shell's preformed rails, enable HDD to go in OK,but theres enough play for it flop about.Certainly nearly all HDD>Air>Metal>Air cooling path.
Bit warm compared to others i have, suppose that can be good or bad ie bad if HDD is a bit hot, good if this is not so & its getting rid of heat. Now connected via SATA,see what temps are,it runs at etc.

    Cheers BOB
