Upgrade advice

Currently on :

E6600 w/ artic cooler
4x 1GB G.skill 6400
Gigabyte ds3 mobo
512mb gainward 8800gt
corsair hx 520w
Few hdd's

Case is fine its a TJ09
Monitor is fine ( 23" LG )
keyboard/mouse are fine.

Ive a bit of money coming in and just wondered if it was worth upgrading ? ive been out of the loop a while ( since i built current rig ) so im not 100% sure on whats hot and whats not, ive not been doing my homework...took a quick look at scan and there is a hell of a lot of new stuff on the market since i built my rig.

Advise accordingly

Uses are gaming, bit of photo editing, college work and web surfing...thats about it really. Have a nice spec HTPC that we watch all the movies on ( directly behind me on a 32" LG )

Reason being ? it still runs the games i currently play on full whack ( cnc kw, bf2, cod4 )

Mainly cpu/board/ram i think...ide sell the current components on.

i see your running a similiar sort of system, is it still a decent rig then ? just figured the way things used to be 6 months down the line your sys would be dated.

Games don't require anything more than 2.2GHz on a dual really and as long as your video stuff is running smooth any upgrade worth doing now will be seriously expensive, if it's worth it at all.

You could try a bit overclocking on your E6600. At 3ghz it would be fine for most things until next year or so. Apart from that your system looks pretty decent. A graphics card update would only be useful to run a game like Crysis at higher resolution but an 8800gt is still a good card. My HD3870 could run Crysis Warhead at 1440x900 with a mixture of gamer and enthusiast settings for most of the game. Since an 8800gt is a faster card even Crysis Warhead should run fine.

Dont get smart, if you read the original question i didnt specify a gfx upgrade did i ? I just put the current rig spec up there.

To be honest if your PC still plays what you want fine, then if aint broke then don't fix it. My E4300 still plays what I want to without issue, I was going to change the CPU, but it would have to be seriously cheap before I'd even consider it at the moment.

Surely the real point is that we are about to change CPU socket and DDR3 is about to become mainstream, so in a few months your new purchase will be obsolete. OK it might be awhile before it becomes mainstream, but if your system runs what you use perfectly well then now's not the time to upgrade. Save your cash for Nehalem.
