Exclamation Help Please Computer Won't Boot!!

    Guys and Gals,
My computer (Abit NF7-S V2 Motherboard, Barton 2500 Processor, 2 x 256 Mb Winbond 3200, 2 x 40gb Maxtor`)is refusing to boot, when I turn it on the following message is displayed:

    AWARD BOOTBLOCK BIOS v1.0
Copyright (c) 2000, Award Software, Inc

    BIOS ROM checksum error

    Detecting floppy drive A media....
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

I tried downloading a new BIOS for it putting it onto a floppy and inserting it at the prompt. Something seemed to be happening when the Flash Utility Screen was displayed. However it just remained at that stage and the floppy drive was not being accessed any more.

I have cleared the cmos multiple times to no avail. Can anyone help me?? Please???

    Thanks for any input,
    Leon

    hmmm.
Could be your bios chip is fooked!
ONe thing is nagging me though, and that is that I had this once four times on the trot and i got rid of it. I just cleared the CMOS but I also changed the jumper on my board from 166 to 100/133 and then it booted on lower settings into my BIOS. Then i saved the CMOS and changed the jumper back and all was ok.
Give it a go, but failing that - well....sorry

Checksum errors have occured on mine as well. You should be able to just reset the CMOS and then edit the BIOS settings, save then restart and it should work. It's probably a setting you've missed.

I can't get into the BIOS. When I turn my computer on that is displayed, the screen where the processor speed and IDE devices is not displayed.

Is there any other way to get to BIOS then?

take the battery out of your motherboard for 15 mins then put it back in and reset your cmos
you could have corrupted your bios if you tried flashing it

change your FSB from 400 to 333

Mine did this when I changed to 400 fsb from 333 and all I did was to move the jumper on the cmos to clear, powered on for 20 secs and moved it back

Hopefully that will clear this warning ( btw - that noise is a weird "squeal" isn't it )

    Update:

After playing around with my computer for about an hour, it is now actually doing something. Instead of not displaying the ide devices and processor speed etc it does now display them. It then gives that message 'CPU Unworkable settings have changed' etc. However I still cannot get into the BIOS. I have tried press the delete key at different times but to no avail, does anyone have any ideas?

Also I use a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse set and I have had problems getting into the bios before because of it. Does anyone
have any usefull hints on how to work around this? (I don't have a spare keyboard )

    Thanks again,
    Leon

I would reset the CMOS again, at the same time leaving teh computer unplugged from the wall. Leave it therefore 15-30mins.

CPU unworkable appears when you reset the CMOS as the CPU speed goes to 1.150ghz or something. When booting after reseting teh CMOS only boot with graphics, CPU, RAM (1 stick). Then get it working a plug your drives back in.

Yes you most probably would have a problem with the wireless keyboard as in the BIOS there are settings to allow keyboards other than PS/2 to work in the BIOS. That's most probably why you can't get into the BIOS.

a collegue at work had the same issue he was playing with his A64 system and totally FUBARED his settings, cleared his bios and then rebooted.

It took him a while to figure out why he could not use his PC and reinstall XP, the culprit - wireless technology

Why do wireless setups not work with bioses ? is this a marketing scheme to sell us all a wired ( for bios and installing OS ) keyboard and a wireless keyboard as well ?
