Re: How does this rig look?

I don't think anyone would recommend that you buy a Radeon 3870 now.
I've got one, and they are great, but £100 is not good value any more.
Either go up to a 4850 (which will be significantly better for only £5 - £10 more) or down to something like an nvidia 9800GT or Radeon 4830 (which Hexus published all about today).

You definitely want the 500GB WD Green? Less money buys you a 640GB WD Blue, although i admit it uses a few more watts to run. If you're considering a High spec graphics card though, i can't imagine those few watts really matter.

As for sound cards, the Asus Xonars get the nod.

Re: How does this rig look?

I have the HD3870 and it is a great card but for 100 quid it is hard to recommend especially when you get the much faster HD4850 for £100 to £110!! The HD3870 has lower overall power consumption though.

The HD4830 is not worth £100 though. If it was below £90 perhaps it would be worth it as it can be overclocked to give around the same overall performance as a HD4850! Also there is a report that some of the HD4830 review samples are shipping with 560 shaders instead of the normal 640!!

Re: How does this rig look?

Yeah only real comments MSIC has covered, Hard drive go for the 640GB instead, grpahics card the 4850 is so much better spend the extra £10 (or £2 if you would be happy with the Palit card), and finally the memory can be found £2 cheaper on Scans today only section.

ok thanks for the quick replies, I will rethink the graphics card and have a look at the other items mentioned.

I agree with what has been said so far, I would also change the monitor though, perhaps to something like this
    http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebPr...s%2c+DVI+Cable
(regularly £125 on scans today only)

The dell value panels leave a lot to be desired.

I'd possibly change the PSU to the 450W as that one is seasonic and the 550W isn't.
