AMD or Intel - fancy helping someone who's "not from round here"?

    http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=90137

I'm no certified CPU expert, but even I can see there's a lot of unfounded/wrong information being hurled about over there.

Perhaps HEXUS could get some true facts down and help out the poor lad who just wants to know which CPU to buy.

Unless you are building a media centre, Intel is almost certainly the way to go. There are a few situations where an AMD may be preferable but you would have to be on a seriously tight budget and willing to compromise.

Even the media centre situation isn't as clear cut as it was a few weeks ago with the new Intel chipset available.
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu
    HTPC: AsRock Z77 Pro 4 / 3770K@4.2GHz / 24GB / GTX 1080 / SST-LC20 / Antec TP-550 / Hisense 65k5510 4K TV / HTC Vive / 2 x 240GB SSD + 12TB HDD Space / Race Seat / Logitech G29 / Win 10 Pro
    HTPC2: Asus AM1I-A / 5150 / 4GB / Corsair Force 3 240GB / Silverstone SST-ML05B + ST30SF / Samsung UE60H6200 TV / Windows 10 Pro
    Spare/Loaner: Gigabyte EX58-UD5 / i950 / 12GB / HD7870 / Corsair 300R / Silverpower 700W modular

Well, what's your usage? Truth is both are more than powerful enough for 99% of common tasks in the coming years.

    It's not me.

I saw the thread, a few replies made me laugh, a few "facts" being offered up were ridiculous.

I thought we'd get a few replies here, help the lad out then I'd link him here.

Sorry, that should be read as 'well, what's one's usage?'

Re: AMD or Intel - fancy helping someone who's "not from round here"?

My word, some of those replies are unbelievable.......

"I think Intel are just ahead at the moment"

"Not a lot in it if you aren't looking at silly money. I was always an Intel fan but recently went with AMD and got the 6000+. Lets face it, do you really notice when its on anyway? The AMD is more bang for buck from what I can see"

"AMD for gaming and Intel for work."

It does get more sensible later on in the thread though thankfully.

There is no way I'd consider buying AMD at the moment, I tested an X2 6000+ a few weeks ago and it was absolutely nailed by the cheapest Celeron (E1200) with a mild OC (2.5GHz.... incredibly easy with even the stock cooler).

If you are going to be doing any sort of HD playback then dont go anywhere near an AMD.

Send them this way then. Can't be helped if they ask the inexperienced users for help. Unless they supress posting links to another forum, he's stuck!

    I'm liking this quote

I'd never use AMD. I've built 3 AMD pc's over the past couple of years, and each one has blown within a year.
